Berndt continues hot hand in Brunswick Euro Challenge

Swede Marcus Berndt, son of former internationals Ernst (Austria) and Yvonne (Sweden) Berndt, continued hot hand and leads the top 16 players of the Round of 48 into the single elimination Round of 32 in best-of-three games match play format.
Berndt, who led the 27th and final qualifying squad on Saturday evening, closed out his six-game set on Sunday morning with a huge 279 game to help grab the No. 17 seed (the top 16 qualifiers earned a bye and will be seeded 1-16 in the finals) with 1401 six-game total and an average of 233.50.
Two-time world champion Remy Ong from Singapore, who was tied for the lead with World Youth Masters champion Mads Sandbaekken, Norway, after five games beat out the Norwegian by two pins for second place, 241-239, and 1387 and 1385 pinfall total, resp.
Finns Petteri Salonen and Piritta Kantola rolled 247 and 237 in their last game to finish in fourth and fifth place with 1375 and 1339 (incl. handicap): Kantola (left) became the sole of seven women in the Round of 48, who survived the cut. She will battle it out for the women's ranking title with team mate Reija Lunden and 3-time defending ranking champion Britt Bröndsted, Denmark.
Also advancing to the next stage was local favorite Alex Tzounis, the president of the Hellenic Bowling Federation (pictured with his wife Dora, right, and his daughter Alexia, left), which will host the European Youth Championships here at Strike Bowling Club next month. The long-time Greek international averaged 220.00 to qualify in 10th place with 1320.
Finn Kai Virtanen (left) fired a 256 score in game #6 and was tied with Greek Youth international Vaggelis Krizinis at 1294. The former World Cup champion advanced due to the higher last game, 256 to 195.
Virtanen, seeded 32nd in the Round of 32 will clash with the tournament leader, his compatriot and reigning World Cup champion Osku Palermaa, right. Berndt will take on No. 16 Stuart Williams from England.
