Macpherson & Renteria lead Qualifying on first day of MoRich Mixed Doubles National Championship

Two 'locals' topped the opening day qualifying rounds of the inaugural MoRich Mixed Doubles National Championship, being held February 3-5 at the Orleans Bowling Center. Local they may be, but also well known throughout the world of bowling are the first day leaders Wendy Macpherson of Henderson, Nevada and Paul Renteria of Las Vegas.
Macpherson, the former PWBA superstar and woman bowler of the 1990's, rolled a terrific 248-694 on the tough tournament conditions, and Renteria added a 212-590. Together they produced the best score of the day – a 1284 to put them in the matchplay finals and guarantee a minimum of $1,000 cash.
Renteria is in the pro shop business in Las Vegas, and Macpherson spends much of her time giving lessons at the Las Vegas center where she works, and coaching the bowling team at UNLV. "Paul and I bowled doubles together a couple of years ago and didn't do very well, so I'm very happy we did so well in this event. It's great to be back in competition with such quality bowlers."
David Haynes and Kelly Kulick also made the finals with scores of 686 and 569 for a 1255. Kulick is also a former PWBA champion who now bowls in PBA regional events to stay sharp. Haynes is currently on Team USA, and they were on the team together in 1999 and 2000 before Kulick turned pro.
Qualifying in the MoRich Mixed Doubles continues today, with squads at 10am, noon, 2pm and 4pm, and again, the squad leaders will be guaranteed a spot in the finals and a minimum of $1,000 cash.
On Sunday, the final two squads will be held at 10am and noon, and the semi-finals and finals will begin at 7:00 pm. First place is guaranteed a minimum of $10,000 regardless of entries, and if the event has 250 entries first will increase to $16,000. One of every four teams will cash.
In addition to the cash prizes each day and after the finals, all bowlers will win $50 discount coupons for MoRich bowling ball purchases, and the top five non-cashing teams on Friday win new MoRich balls.
