Liz Johnson and Dave Guindon top Saturday Qualifying in MoRich Mixed Doubles
02/06/06
On the second day of the event, Saturday February 4, here at the Orleans Bowling Center, two familiar names in the sport led all qualifiers. Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, NY and Dave Guindon, W. Seneca, NY rolled a 1341 in the noon squad to secure their spot in the finals.
With two squads of qualifying to go, six mixed doubles teams have qualified for the MoRich Mixed Doubles match play finals, and many more have cashed and made the cut to the semi-finals.
Johnson, an 11-time PWBA champion, made headlines last year by finishing second in a televised PBA finals, and Guindon is well known as the man who rolled a perfect 300 on television to win the International Eliminator a few years ago.
Johnson led the team with a 717, sandwiching a 221 in-between opening and closing 248's. Guindon posted lines of 244, 170 and 210 for a 624.
An outstanding individual performance resulted in the team of Leisha Murr, Fort Worth, TX and David Ewald, Malcomb, MN making the finals. Ewald, the 2002 Mini Eliminator champion, rolled games of 241, 269 and 279 for a huge 796 in the opening squad of the day. Murr struggled early with a disappointing 148 opener, but she found her game to close with a 210, giving her team a closing score of 489. Their 1334 total tied for the squad lead, but the 489 game gave them the tie-breaker over Purvis Granger and Shalin Zulkifli. Their best team game was 467.
From the 2 pm squad, two outstanding Las Vegans advanced to the finals. Christina Kinney and Adam Ishman rolled a 1318 to make it, with Ishman rolling 246-695 and Kinney tossing a big 278 opening game to anchor her 623.
Finally, in the 4 pm squad, Stephanie Sjobom, Murrieta, CA and DeWaine West (pictured right), Temecula, CA made the finals with a 1292 in the last squad of the day. Sjobom was very steady with a 235-682, and West supported his partner with a 209-610.
Two squads at 10 am and noon will complete the qualifying today, and then the event will take a break for a big Bowlers Only Texas Hold Em Poker Game during the NFL Super Bowl Football Game.
After the game, approximately 7 pm, a two game semi-finals will produce the other 8 teams who will join the 8 squad leaders in the matchplay finals. The matchplay finals will be head-to-head matches with a best 2 out of 3 game single elimination bracket format.
