Laura Hardeman and Steven Smith defeated 'local' favorites Wendy Macpherson and Paul Renteria two-games-to-none in the championship match in best-of-three-game format en route to win the inaugural Mixed Doubles National Championship.
The champions rolled games of 422 and 432 to split the $10,000 first prize check. Macpherson, the female Bowler of the 90s and multiple PWBA Player of the Year, and Renteria, the 2002 Mini-Eliminator champion, who shot a 509-game in the semifinal victory over 24-time PWBA champion Leanne Barrette and Jeff Franckos, lost the first game 422-379.
Hardeman, who is PWBA regional champion, saved the best till the end when she posted three turkeys (frames 1-3, 5-7 and in the 10th frame) to finish with 230. Smith, who shot back-to-back 246-games in their semifinal win over a former and a current Team USA member, Kelly Kulick and David Haynes, added a 202-score for 432.
Macpherson and Renteria struggled and were unable to double till the 10th frame, when the 20-time PWBA champion got a double for 195. Renteria, who had high games of 277, 267 and 257 in the finals got his first strike in the 9th frame (!) when the match was already over. The favorites had to settle for second place worth 5,000.
The semi-final losers earned $2,50, while the second-round losers received $1,500 and the first-round losers garnered $1,000.
