Pat Grogan wins $10,000 top prize in Brunswick Shootout Finals from 205 & Under Division

Pat Grogan, Seneca, South Carolina was the only player to top the 200-mark in the final game of the 2006 Super Bowl Mini Eliminator Brunswick Shootout, and his steady 201 was enough to earn the $10,000 champion's check in the $125,000 event.
"This is the biggest thing I've ever won," said the 44-year-old postal worker. When he's not bowling or delivering mail on his rural route in Westminster, SC, Grogan likes spending time with his wife Pam and his two teenage kids, Stephanie 19, and Trey 16. He used a Brunswick Scorchin Inferno and a Vapor Zone in the title game.
The title match was close all the way, with all five players striving to find the line on the Orleans lanes 5 and 6, and when all five struck in the 9th frame, the match went down to the final frame for all five players. The key shot was Grogan's first delivery in the 10th frame, which gave him a double.
Knowing it was close, Grogan pulled the shot, but it crossed the headpin just enough to carry the strike on the Brooklyn side. He then made a clutch 3-6-10 spare to shut out all his opponents. "I was shaking on that one, because I knew I needed it," he said.
Grogan's formidable opponents in the Shootout match were former Mini champ and senior bowler Vinnie Atria, Louisville, KY, who finished second with a 195; Scott Pohl, Burnsville, MN with a 189 (Open division), William Holota, Bolton, CT with 186 (39 and under division), and Michael Banha, Emerson, NJ with a 170 (40-49).
Atria rolled a 4-bagger at the end of the match, but two missed spares in the second and third frames left him too far behind to catch up. "I guess I just went brain dead," he said. Atria earned $5,000 for his efforts, Pohl took home $3,000, Holota cashed for $2,500 and Banha earned $2,000.
The Brunswick Shootout remains one of the most popular aspects of the Mini Eliminator, and all week players earned spots in the event with their qualifying performances in special shootout squads. Over 300 players in the event all won new Brunswick Scorchin Infernos, and the unique event requires all players to use only Brunswick brand balls at all times.
With the Brunswick Shootout completed, the Mini Eliminator staff now turns its attention to the Super Mini Main Event. Qualifying continued on Saturday with four squads, and the final two qualifying squads of the 2006 event roll at 10 am and noon Sunday morning. The finals begin at 4:00 pm, and the $50,000 champion will be crowned around 7 pm.
