Paul Moor shoots 1588 to win the qualifying in 5th Storm San Marino Open

    2009EBT08PaulMoor.jpg2009 European Bowling Tour Masters Paul Moor (pictured left), England, won the qualifying in the 5th Storm San Marino Open. The 3-time European ranking champion posted a huge 1588 series, an average of 264.67, in the 22nd out of 24 qualifying squads Saturday at Rose’n Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino, to lead 48 players into the finals on Sunday.

    The lefty started his six-game series with 289, 279 followed by 257, 256, 260 and closed out his set with a "low game" of 247 to miss the 1600 by just 12 pins.

    Previous leader Luca Osella, Italy, slipped to second place with 1542. Canadian Dan MacLelland was the third player who cracked the 1500-bar with 1515.

    2009EBT08GeryVerbruggen.jpgRounding out the top six players, who will bypass the first two rounds of the final, were 4. Marco Baade, Germany, 1472 5. Nico Joris, Belgium, 1458 and 6. Raymond Jansson, Sweden, 1457.

    4-time European ranking champion Gery Verbruggen (pictured right), Belgium, started the final qualifying day in San Marino with a 1449 to lead Squad 21 and to move into 7th place with 1449 to miss a second bye by eight pins. The lefty leads a group of six players, who receive one bye.

    2009EBT08MaurizioCelli.jpgDennis Eklund rolled two 300 games in qualifying, but none of them came in the 1440 series which propelled the Swede into 8th place. His compatriot Robert Andersson was 9th with 1436, followed by PBA super star Mika Koivuniemi, Finland, with 1432 and European Masters champion Dominic Barrett, England, with 1432.

    Rounding out the top 12 was Maurizio Celli (pictured left), Italy, who led the 24th and final squad with 1449. Canadian Mark Buffa was the only other player from this squad to move into the top 38 with 1394, good for 23rd place.

    2009EBT08VeronicalLantto.jpgSwedish national team member Veronica Lantto (pictured right) beat out her fiancé Osku Palermaa, Finland (1411, 20th place), to lead Squad 23 with 1424 including 48 pins handicap, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour, to finish qualifying as the top-ranked woman bowler in 13th place.

    Just two more women, Amanda Fagan, United States (15th, 1372) and reigning European ranking queen Nina Flack, Sweden (29th, 1337) survived the first cut.

    2009EBT08FedericoRossi.jpgSquad 1 leader Federico Rossi (pictured left, Italy, hit the cutoff number for 38th place with 1362 or an average of 227.00.

    A total of 48 players advance to the finals on Sunday: Joining the top 38 are the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 4-5, the top 4 from the squads conducted on July 6-8 and the top 3 from the Desperado Squad.

    The top 6 qualifiers will earn two byes, while qualifiers 6-12 will get one. The other 36 will bowl four games from scratch to the top 18, who will meet qualifiers 6-12 in round two. They bowl another 4-game set from scratch to cut to the top 10, who will join the top six qualifiers in single-elimination match play over two games total pinfall.

    The highest seeded player bowls the lowest seeded, the second-highest seeded players bowls the second-lowest and so on. The field will be cut to 8, 4 then 2, who will bowl for the EBT "major" title and the 10.000 Euro top prize.

    The 5th Storm San Marino Open is the 8th stop of the 2009 European Bowling Tour and one of the Tour's "Majors". The total prize fund is 55.000 Euro. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game. As an EBT Major, there are 100 ranking points at stake for the winner of the men's and women's rankings, respectively.
