Stampe, Larsen, Rash move to the top in 8th Columbia 300 Vienna Open

    Martin Larsen, Osku Palermaa Take the lead in Doubles

    2010EBT15MikStampe.jpg2010EBT15AndersLousdalMikStampe.jpgThe international bowlers have arrived in Austria's capital city of Vienna and some of Europe's finest as well as a PBA champion moved to the top of the leaderboard in Singles and Doubles in the 8th Columbia 300 Vienna Open on Thursday afternoon at Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria.

    Mik Stampe (pictured left) of Denmark had a solid start into qualifying squad 7 with games of 190, 227 and 212 before he closed things out with a 799 3-game series including games of 255, 265 and 279 to overtake the lead in Singles with 1428 six-game total and an average of 238.00.

    2010EBT15AndersLousdal288MikStampe279.jpgStampe teamed with fellow Danish national team member Anders Lousdal (above, on the left) for Doubles and both players started the sixth game with the front nine. Lousdal got the 10 before a 3-9 stopped his run and Stampe got a solid 9 on his pocket shot in the 10th for 288 and 279, respectively.

    The Danes overtook Doubles leaders Gal Shemer and Or Aviram, Israel, by 45 pins with 2743.

    2010EBT15MartinLarsenOskuPalermaa.jpg3-time World Champion Martin Larsen (left), Sweden, had four games between 234 and 257 to become the second player who cracked the 1400-bar to jump into second place with 1405 or an average of 234.17.

    Larsen teamed with 3-time defending European Bowling Tour ranking champion Osku Palermaa (right), Finland, and the two-hander added 1385 including high games of 267 and 254 which propelled the duo to the top of the Doubles leaderboard with 2789 (232.42 avg.).

    Palermaa leaped into fifth place in the Singles qualifying just one pin behind previous leader, defending Vienna Open champion Thomas Gross, Austria, who slipped to 4th place with 1385.

    Former World Champion Tore Torgersen (right photo, left), Norway (1378) and 2010 World Champion in Doubles, Mathias Ă…rup (right), Sweden (1371) moved into 6th and 7th place in Singles and into second place in Doubles with 2749.

    Rounding out the top 8 in Singles was Or Aviram, Israel, who fell from second to 8th place with 1355 (225.83).

    2010EBT15KaterinaBestova.jpgKaterina Bestova (right), Czech Republic, is the best of 27 women in 10th place with 1348 including 48 pins handicap, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    The cut for 52nd place improved by 32 pins. With 189 players from 19 countries in the books, Karel Hladik, Czech Republic, is currently the "man on the bubble" with 1193 or an average of 198.83.

    Qualifying continues on Thursday with Squad 8 at 4pm and Squad 9 at 8pm CET.

    2010VOLogo.jpg The 8th Columbia 300 Vienna Open is the 15th stop of the 2010 European Bowling Tour and one of the Tour's "Gold" events. The tournament will be held from Tuesday Sept. 28 through Sunday Oct. 3, 2010 at 32-lane Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria.

    Since the Ankara Open and the Austria Challenge have been cancelled and the English Open has lost its EBT status, the 2010 EBT Tour consists of 18 events - 2 EBT Platinum tournament (formerly Premier), 6 EBT Gold tournaments (formerly Major), 6 EBT Silver tournaments (formerly Challenger) and 4 EBT Satellite tournaments (new category).

    More than 300 players from 26 countries will compete for an increased total prize money of 70.630 Euro - 60.400 € in Singles and 10.230 € in Doubles. The singles champion will receive the 7.000 Euro top prize while the doubles winners will split 1.600.

    Once again the qualifying for the Vienna Open finals is contested as a doubles tournament. Each duo rolls at least one six-game block. Unlimited re-entries with different partners are possible but each player can only cash once with the same partner.

    Qualifying runs from Tuesday through Saturday and ends with the ultimate one-game Desperado Squad on Saturday night Oct. 2 slated for 11.30 pm local time (GMT +1). Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, a standard on the European Bowling Tour

    A total of 64 players will qualify for the Vienna Open finals on Sunday, Oct. 3:
    • the top 52 players from the overall qualifying standings
    • the first player each from Squad 1-6, who is not among the top 52 (total 6 players)
    • and the top 6 from the Desperado Squad.

    The other 52 players will bowl 6 games starting from scratch to cut to the top 22, who will join the top qualifiers in Round Two.

    Those 30 players will bowl another 6 games starting from scratch after which the field will be trimmed to the top 18, who will carry their pinfall forward into Round Three. After another 6-game block the top 4 with the highest 12-game total will advance to the stepladder finals.

    The No. 4 seed meets the No. 3 in the opening match and the winner takes on the No. 2 seed for the right to bowl the top seed for the title, 150 ranking points and the 7.000 Euro top prize.
