Defending champion Mike DeVaney (pictured left) of Murrieta, Calif., averaged 247.83 for his first six of 12 games to take the early lead in the Scorpion Championship qualifying round at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas Thursday.
DeVaney, who won his second Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour title in the 2009 Scorpion Championship in Allen Park, Mich., had 1,487 pins for a 3-pin lead over Squad A leader Jason Belmonte (right), the two-hander from Down-under, who was second with 1,484.
Jack Jurek of Lackawanna, N.Y., defending champion in the Shark Championship on Friday, was third with 1,455 and was followed by Chris Barnes, Double Oak, Texas, in fourth place with 1,441.

Kelly Kulick (left) of Union, N.J. and Pete Weber (right), St. Ann, Mo., were tied for fifth place with 1,436.

Five international bowlers among Top 16 after six of twelve games

Canadian Dan MacLelland was eighth with 1,423 with 3-time World Champion Martin Larsen, Sweden in 11th place (1,408), Ildemaro Ruiz (below left), Venezuela in 13th (1,402) and Andres Gomez (below right), Colombia (1,394) in 15th place.

246 of the original 252-player field will complete their 12 games on Thursday. After 12 games, the top 16 players will advance to the match play portion of the Scorpion Championship next Tuesday, Nov. 2.
"This and the Shark are the lane conditioning patterns I bowl really well on," DeVaney said. "I made up some ground today, but these guys are really good. I hit a speed bump yesterday (on the Chameleon pattern), so I have to make up some ground."
DeVaney was in 18th place in the PBA World Championship standings after 36 games, 131 pins out of the eighth and final spot for the live ESPN/ESPN2 stepladder finals for the World Championship.
