The first two rounds of the AMF Australian Masters finals got underway on Friday afternoon at AMF Bowling Rooty Hill RSL in Sydney, Australia. In each six-game round 12 men and 12 women were eliminated. Among those eliminated in the first round was defending women's champion Jacinta Gillilandof Queensland.
Sam Cooley, New South Wales and Rebekah Meads, QLD, finished atop the leaderboard of round two to lead the top 12 men and top 12 women into the third round where they will meet the top 4 qualifiers who bypassed the first two rounds.
Cooley had a 1439 six-game series including high games of 278 and 268 to lead the men's division by 9 pins over Jarrod Lean, NSW, who closed out his series with 267 and 266 for 1430. Hong Kong's Ivan Chung had a slow start into the round with back-to-back 189 games but a 300 in the fifth game propelled him into third place with 1359.
Defending champion Paul Trotter (pictured right), Victoria, knocked down 1276 pins, good for 11th place. Mitch Marris, West Australia, took the 12th and last place to advance with 1258 or an average of 209.67.
The top 12 men will bowl the top 4 qualifiers, Michael Little, NSW; Chris Kirwin, NT; Jason Doust, ACT; and Robert Townsend, ACT in another six-game round starting from scratch.
On the women's side Meads used five games between 216 and 236 for 1324, an average of 220.76, to hold a 44-pin buffer over second-place Cassie Staudinger, VIC, with 1280. Third place belonged to Lexi Nicoll, NSW, with 1279.
Notables, who made the second cut were two-time World Champion Clara Juliana Guerrero (pictured left), Colombia (4th, 1263) and 16-time PWBA champions Carol Gianotti, WA, and Dana Miller-Mackie, United States, in eighth and ninth place with 1228 and 1225, respectively.
Emily Robertson, VIC, hit the cutoff number for 12th place with 1206, a 201 average. The top 12 women will join Rebecca Voukolos, Northern Territory; Lynda Barnes; USA; Wendy Macpherson; USA; and Raniia Nugroho, NSW, in the third round.
A total of 40 men and 40 women advanced to the finals. The top 4 in each division received two byes to Round 3 while bowlers seeded positions 5 through 16 received one bye to Round 2. Bowlers filling qualifying positions 17 through 40 competed in Round 1. No pinfall will carry over in any of the final rounds.
Bowlers 17 through 40 bowled 6 games scratch to cut to the top 12 bowlers who joined bowlers seeded positions 5 through 16 in Round 2. These 24 bowlers also played 6 games scratch. The top 12 bowlers on total pinfall meet the top 4 qualifiers in Round 3.
These 16 bowlers will play another six-game block scratch. The top 8 bowlers on total pinfall will determine the champion in single-elimination best-of-five games match play. The field will be cut to 4 and then two players who will bowl for the 2010 AMF Australian Masters titles and the $25,000 and $15,000 AUD top prizes, respectively. The winners will also get free entry into the 2011 event.
