Osku Palermaa wins qualifying in Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament

PBA champion Osku Palermaa (pictured left) of Finland led a field of 48 players into finals of the Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament Sunday at Dolfijn Bowling Tilburg in Tilburg, Netherlands.
The two-hander, who has won the PBA GEICO Shark Championship during the World Series of Bowling, last November, had games of 249, 227, 218, 279, 278 and 227 to win the qualifying with 1478 six-game total and an average of 246.33.
Trailing Palermaa by 27 pins to land in second and third place were Dane Anja Ginge Jensen (right) and Tore Torgersen, Norway, who both chalked up 1451 pins. Jensen, who was the best of 48 women in the 199-player field from 18 countries, was seeded second due to the higher last game, 280 scratch to Torgersen's 249.

Five players moved into the top 10 during Saturday's squads 12-14. Dane Jesper Agerbo (left) knocked down 1401 pins in the morning squad 12 to finish qualifying in fifth place with an average of 233.50. Timo Schroeder, Germany, was next with 1392 to help grab eighth place overall.
Agerbo's fellow Danish national team member Thomas Larsen (right) finished atop the leaderboard in Squad 13 with 1378 to position himself in the 9th through 16th place group in 11th place to earn two byes for Sunday's finals.
Three women led the 14th and last qualifying squad en route to crack the top 10 in qualifying. Long-time German national team member Tanya Cuva (below left with Nadine Geissler, left) led the way with 1367 scratch, a 227.83 average, to rocket into fourth place with 1415 including 48 pins handicap.

Dutch Ghislaine van der Tol (right) was mere 17 pins behind to overtake sixth place with 1398 total. Rounding out the 8, who will bypass the first three rounds of the finals was 4-time European Bowling Tour ranking champion Gery Verbruggen, Belgium, who landed in seventh place with 1394.
Cuva's compatriot Nadine Geissler was another 16 pins behind van der Tol to leap into tenth place in the overall qualifying standing with 1382.
Multiple European champion Jouni Helminen (left), Finland, was the sole player who managed a 300 game on the dual lane condition and made the first cut in 24th place with 1361. Karsten Aust, Germany, took the 38th and last qualifying spot with 1322 six-game total and an average of 220.33.
Joining the top 38 in Sunday's finals are six players from a separate leaderboard of Squads 1-4. The top 4 of that list qualified in the top 38 and Dirk Dreyer, Germany; Johnny Spil, Netherlands; Jimmy Ravez, Belgium; Christian Kweens, Roel Mol, and Eric Kok, all Netherlands, took advantage.
In addition the top 4 players of the Desperado Squad booked the last four spots for the finals. Surviving the one-game contest were Eike Kabowski (255) and Stefan Klockgether (237) of Germany as well as Danes Rikke Holm Agerbo (233 including handicap) and Jimmy Mortensen (228).
The Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament is the third stop of the 2011 European Bowling Tour and first of seven EBT "Silver" tournaments this season. The tournament will be held from Sunday Feb. 28 through Sunday March 6, 2011 at Dolfijn Bowling Tilburg, a 20-laner in Tilburg, Netherlands.
Since the Viborg International in Viborg, Denmark originally scheduled for July 30-Aug. 7, 2011 has been cancelled, the 2011 European Bowling Tour consists of 21 tour stops in 17 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, seven Silver and six Satellite tournaments.
The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament such as the Bronzen Schietspoel earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament gets 50 ranking points.
The total prize fund of the 2011 Tour exceeds one million Euro. The top 16 men and women in the EBT ranking will qualify for the fifth EBT Masters at Dream Bowl Palace in Unterföhring near Munich, Germany on April 30 and May 1, 2012.
Participants in the 2011 Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament will compete for total prize money of 51.200 Euro or approximately US $70,390 with 8.000 Euro going to the winner, 6.000 to the runner-up and 4.000 and 2.000 to third and fourth place finishers, respectively.
The Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament features dual lane condition. The left lane is dressed with the 46 feet long pattern (pdf file), the right lane with the 33 feet short pattern (pdf file).

A total of 48 players - the top 38 qualifiers, the top 4 from the Desperado Squad and the top six from a separate leaderboard of the squads conducted Feb. 27th through March first (Squads 1-4) advanced to the finals on Sunday, Feb. 14. The top 8 qualifiers receive three byes and qualifiers 9-16 earn two byes.
The remaining 32 players will be divided into eight groups of four players each for the first round of two games scratch with the total pinfall determining the position. The top two players from each group will advance to the next round.
The field will be cut to 32, 24, 16, eight and then four, who will determine the champion in the sixth and final round of two games.
