Jim Goodwin, Joan Romeo elected to lead Bowling Writers Association of America in 2011-12

During the reconvened session of the Bowling Writers Association of America (BWAA) Board Meeting on June 28, 2011, the Board of Directors elected Jim Goodwin (pictured left), Rockwall, Texas., as President and Joan Romeo, Van Nuys, Calif., as Vice President. Their term of office is August 1, 2011 through July 31, 2012.
As a sports writer and publisher/editor, Goodwin's background has been highly significant. Since 1984 to the present he has been a member of BWAA and a member of the BWAA board of directors starting in 1997. He founded the Stars and Strikes Bowling Newsmagazine, which is the only national bowling tabloid in the U.S., now in it's 21st year.
Goodwin was awarded the inaugural Mike Hennessy BWAA Award of Merit in 2011. The award places focus on sports writers who have contributed to the betterment of bowling by educating the public both general and sport specific of the accomplishments of those involved in the game as well as offering thoughtful and provocative commentary on issues that affect the direction and future of bowling.
Romeo was elected to serve on the BWAA Board of Directors in 2008. Bowling has surrounded Joan Romeo most of her life. The mother of champions Robin and Tori, she has followed, and promoted bowling since she was a 168 average housewife in New York.
The owner of her own business, The Marketing Team, her 30 plus years in Marketing has been a plus for bowling. One of her talents include event planning; from beginning to end; flawlessly taking care of every detail. Although she is a doting mother of her five children (all grown) her first love is bowling with a goal of elevating the status of women in bowling.
Both Goodwin and Romeo were on the committee tasked to spearhead the newly unveiled 50 Years of Women's Pro Bowling exhibit at the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame.
The legendary John Jowdy (left), San Diego, Calif., announced his retirement from the BWAA Board, mid-term, at the Annual Meeting on June 28, 2011, citing health issues. The ninety-one year old has been involved with the organization since the mid-50's, is a Past President and has emceed the Columbia Hall of Fame dinner since it's inception.
A member of the USBC, PBA, Texas, San Antonio Bowling, BWAA and the Coaches Halls of Fame, Jowdy has written columns for several prominent Bowling Magazines and local publications. He has penned two books, Bowling Execution and Bowling Execution Second Edition.
By unanimous consent, the Board approved the appointment of Brandy Padilla (right), Winter Haven, Fla., to serve out the term of office through July 31, 2012, vacated by Jowdy. For the past two years she has served on the Kegel Bowler of the Month, Collegiate Polls, College Bowler of the Year and Amateur Bowler of the Year committees.
Padilla is a research engineer for Kegel where she works on development of lane cleaners and conditioners and she is developing a line of pro shop products for bowling ball maintenance. She is editor of The Foundation's monthly newsletter, The Cornerstone and a staff writer for the Orlando Bowling Examiner.
