Colombia’s Clara Juliana Guerrero and Manuel Otalora swept the titles in singles at the 4th PABCON Champion of Champions tournament currently underway at Noria Pro Bowling in Puebla, Mexico.
Guerrero (pictured left and above), a two-time World Champion and two-time World Cup champion, averaged of 230 for eight games to lead the 25-player women’s field with the field-best 1840 total.
The reigning Pan American Bowling Confederation singles champion started her series with five games between 225 and 205 before she averaged 255 for the last three games (246, 255 and 264) to secure the victory.
Shannon Pluhowsky, United States, who had three games under 200 in the first five games, used high games of 277 and 264 to take second place with 1770 (221.25). Third place belonged to Kamilah Dammers of Aruba with 1763 (220.38).
Otalora (right) survived a late scare from Ildemaro Ruiz Jr. to beat out the Venezuelan for the top spot by three pins. The Colombian started his set with 218 and 203 and rebounded from a low game of 170 with 264, 234, 278, 226 and 235 to win the men’s singles with 1828 and an average of 228.50.
Down by 37 pins heading into the last game, Ruiz fired a 269 game but fell three pins short off a tie to land in second place with 1825 (228.13). Team USA’s Chris Via, who led the field of 24 after seven games, slipped to third place with 1790 (223.75) behind a 173 final game.
Action shifts to the doubles competition on Sunday which also determines the standing in All-Events and the players, who will advance to the Masters, which will conclude the COC. The top three countries in both the men’s and women’s field automatically will qualify for the 2017 World Games, which will be held in Wroclaw, Poland.
