Guerrero, Restrepo win gold for Colombia in Women’s Doubles

2015PAGClaraJulianaGuerreroRocioRestrepo2.jpgClara Juliana Guerrero and Rocio Restrepo captured the title in Women’s Doubles Thursday at the Pan Am bowling center to win the first gold medal in the bowling competition at the XVII Pan American Games “Toronto 2015” for Colombia.

The duo, which the 14-nation women’s field after the first six-game block on Wednesday with 2409 (200.75), averaged 222.08 in the second block on Thursday to cruise to the title with 5074 total an a combined average of 211.42.

Team USA’s Liz Johnson and Shannon Pluhowsky (right, r-l), who started the day in second place just 28 pins behind the Colombians, could not catch the steady Colombian team and finished 149 pins back in second place to earn the silver medal with 4925 total and an overall average of 205.21.

Patricia De Faria and Karen Marcano (left, l-r) of Venezuela maintained third place to secure the bronze medal with 4819 total (200.79). The Venezuelans were able to weather a strong charge by Puerto Rico’s Mariana Ayala and Kristie Lopez, who rolled the third-highest series of the day with 2532 but fell seven pins short of the bronze medal to finish fourth with 4811 (200.46).

Action shifts to the singles competition, which starts Friday with 12 games of qualifying, after which the field will be cut to the top eight bowlers for match play on Saturday. Bowlers will take their pinfall totals into match play, which will consist of one-game matches with the winner receiving 20 bonus pins. The top four bowlers after match play advance to the semifinals and finals, also on Saturday.

PanAmericanGamesLogo.jpgHeld every four years, the Pan American Games are an Americas version of the Olympic Games which includes the Olympic program sports and others that are not part of the Olympics. The Pan American Games are the second-largest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games.

The XVII Pan American Games “Toronto 2015” run from July 10-26 in Toronto, Canada, with preliminary rounds in certain events having begun on July 7, 2015. This year, 6,100 athletes from 41 countries and territories from the Americas are competing in 36 sports in the 15 host communities of the Greater Golden Horseshoe region.

Bowling competition takes place at Planet Bowl in Etobicoke, Toronto, Canada, from July 22-26. 56 players, 28 men and 28 women, from 15 Pan American Bowling Confederation (PABCON) member federations compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Men’s and Women’s Singles and Doubles.
