    Six women atop the field as qualifying in Chandra Open reaches halfway point

    Carmen Haandrikman (pictured left), Netherlands, and Cassie Staudinger (right) of Australia, led the sixth of 12 qualifying squads Thursday evening (Squad 4 and 5 have been cancelled).

    Haandrikman posted games of 205, 256, 205, 225, 212 and 254 for 1357 scratch, an average of 226.17, and added 48 pins handicap to take the pole position with 1405 total.

    2011EBT16BirgitPoppler.jpg2011USWOLisanneBreeschoten3.jpgThe Aussie was 84 pins behind in second place with 1321 including handicap, good for sixth place in the overall qualifying standings. Staudinger had high games of 254, 245 and 234 but also suffered three sub-par games (168, 181 and 199).

    Sandwiched between the Haandrikman and Staudinger are the top four players from Wednesday's Squad 3, Birgit Pöppler (left, 1403), Germany, and Dutch Ghislaine van der Tol (1386), Danielle van der Meer (1380) and Lisanne Breeschoten (right, 1327).

    Johnny Spil, Netherlands, who led the first qualifying Squad on Monday evening, is still the best male bowler in the tournament in seventh place with 1311.

Reigning European Bowling Tour ranking champion Dominic Barrett (left) started his first attempt with 243 but had to settle for 51st place with 1161 behind five games between 145 and 209.

    Alexander Medveditskov (right) of Russia is the "man on the bubble" in 30th place with 1219 and an average of 203.17.

    Qualifying continues Friday, Sept. 23 with Squad 7 and 8 scheduled for noon and 4 p.m. CET. Squad 9 scheduled for 8 p.m. has been cancelled.

    2011ChandraOpenLogo.jpg The Chandra Open is a newcomer on the European Bowling Tour and will be held Sept. 19-25, 2011 at 16-lane Chandra Bowling in Nieuwegein, Netherlands, The tournament is the 16th stop of the 2011 Tour and the fifth out of six EBT "Satellite" tournaments this season.

    The tournament offers total prize fund of 24.600 Euro with 5.000 Euro going to the winner and 3.000 Euro to the runner-up, while the third and fourth place finishers will receive 2.000 Euro and 1.000, respectively.

    Since the English Open has lost its EBT status, the 2011 European Bowling Tour consists of 20 tour stops in 16 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, six Silver and six Satellite tournaments.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament such as the Chandra Open gets 50 ranking points.

    The top 16 men and the top 16 women at the end of the 2011 season qualify for the fifth EBT Masters to be held at Dream-Bowl Palace in Unterföhring near Munich, Germany on April 30 and May 1, 2012. The event will become the first EBT Masters to be contested on single lane condition.

    Qualifying of the Chandra Open (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) runs from Monday, Sept. 19 through Saturday, Sept. 24 with the last Squad 12 scheduled for 6 p.m. CET and concludes with the Desperado Squad slated for 9.30 p.m. Women will receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire event, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 38 players will advance to the finals on Sunday, Sept. 25 - the top 30 players from the overall qualifying standings plus the top 4 from a separate leader board of Squad 1-3, and the top 4 from the Desperado Squad. The top 6 qualifiers earn one bye.

    The other 32 players will bowl six games starting from scratch with the top 10 advancing to the second round. The top 10 from Round One and the top six qualifiers will bowl six games starting from scratch to cut to the top 8.

    Those eight will bowl another six-game block with the pinfall from Round Two being carried forward. The player with the highest 12-game total will be declared the winner.
