Daniel Vezis takes over pole position in 8th Storm San Marino Open qualifying

    17-year-oldtwo-hander shoots 1364 series in Squad 7 to lead a field of 122 bowlers; cut for 35th place is now 1200 (200 average)

    2012EBT11DanielVezis.jpg2012EBT11YoanAlix.jpgFresh off his victory in the 10th Czech Open, 17-year-old two-hander Daniel Vezis (pictured left) posted a 1364 series to overtake the pole position in the qualifying of the 8th Storm San Marino Open at Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle.

    The former Latvian national team member, who is now playing under his English nationality, led the seventh qualifying squad Tuesday afternoon behind games of 208, 203, 246, 228, 245 and 234 and an average of 227.33 over six games.

    Previous leader Yoan Alix (right) of France, who posted a 1333 six-game series in Monday's qualifying Squad 5, slipped to second place with Squad 2 leader Renato Bortolon (below left) of Italy in third place with 1329.

    2012EBT11RenatoBortolon.jpg2012EBT11MaurizioCelli.jpgItalian international Maurizio Celli (right) had games of 276, 211, 238, 209, 181 and 207 in Squad 8 on Tuesday evening en route to move into fourth place in the overall standings with 1322.

    By virtue of leading the separate leaderboard of Squads 5-8, Vezis, Alix and Celli are automatically qualified for Sunday's finals in case they would not finish among the top 35 in qualifying. Bortolon was already qualified by finishing in the top 3 of Squads 1-4.

    Places five to seven belong to French bowlers. Past French national team members Serge Frouvelle and Laurence Gaillard were tied at 1318 to sit in fifth and sixth place, respectively.

Monica Bagnolini of Italy (23rd, 1234) and Josefine Linderoth of Sweden (31st, 1210) are the others. Thierry Sacco is seventh with 1317.

    Nico D'Achille (right) of Italy was second to Vezis in Squad 7 with 1316 to move into eighth place. Mark Jonasdofsky of Germany fell to ninth with 1311. Rounding out the top 10 was Davide Spagnoli, Italy, with 1305.

    Timo Schröder, Germany, who was second to Celli in Squad 8 with 1303, is the eleventh and last player so far who has cracked the 1100-bar. Riccardo Bonato of Italy currently holds the 35th and last place to advance with 1200 or an average of 200.

    Qualifying continues Wednesday, July 11, with Squad 9, 10 and 11 scheduled for noon, 4 and 8 p.m. CEST.

    2012EBT11SanMarinoOpenBanner1_small.jpg The 8th Storm San Marino Open is the 11th stop of the 2012 European Bowling Tour and the second out of four EBT "Gold" tournaments this season. The tournament will be held July 7-15 at 18-lane Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino and offers total prize fund of 60.200 Euro with 10.000 Euro going to the winner, 6.000 to the runner-up and 3.400 each to the third and fourth place finisher.

    The San Marino Open features a 40 feet Kegel lane conditioning pattern with 24.3ml volume oil total.

    The qualifying of the San Marino Open (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) runs from Saturday July 7 through Saturday, July 14 with the last qualifying squad 21 scheduled for 9 p.m. CEST. The qualifying winner will receive a 1.000 Euro bonus.

    Qualifying concludes with the one-game Desperado Squad scheduled to start at half past Midnight. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire tournament, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 48 players will advance to the finals on Sunday, July 15 - the top 35 players from the overall qualifying standings plus the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 7-8, the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 9-10, the top 4 from the squads conducted on July 11-12, and the top 3 from the Desperado Squad. The top 8 qualifiers receive two byes and qualifiers 9-16 get one.

    The other 32 players will bowl four games from scratch to cut to the top 16, who will meet qualifiers 9-16 in round two. Those 24 bowl another 4 games from scratch to cut to the top 8, who will join the top eight qualifiers in single-elimination match play with the two game total pinfall determining the winner.

    The highest seeded player bowls the lowest seeded, the second-highest seeded players bowls the second-lowest and so on. The field will be cut to 8, 4 then 2, who will bowl for the title and the 10.000 Euro top prize.

    2012EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2012 European Bowling Tour is made up of 21 events in 16 countries including two Platinum, four Gold, eight Silver and seven Satellite tournaments.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish in the event. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament such as the San Marino Open 2012 gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament gets 50 ranking points.

    Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 16 men and top 16 women who will compete in the sixth EBT Masters in Bratislava, Slovakia in Sept. 2013.
