Joachim Karlsson cracks 1500-bar in Friday's qualifying at 8th Storm San Marino Open

    Swede averages over 253 to lead the 232-player field into the final day of qualifying; PBA Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli is "on the bubble" with 1314 (219 average)

    2012EBT11JoachimKarlsson.jpg2012EBT11MartinLarsen.jpgJoachim Karlsson (pictured left) became the first player in the 8th Storm San Marino Open who cracked the 1500-bar (250 average) when the Swede posted 1519 in the 15th qualifying squad Friday afternoon at Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle.

    Karlsson used two 279 and a 277 game to rocket to the top of the 232-player leaderboard with an average of 253.17 over six games.

    Karlsson leads his compatriot Martin Larsen (right), who had 1476 the day before, by 43 pins. The next three places belong to English bowlers.

    2012EBT04DominicBarrett.jpg2012EBT11StuartWillams.jpgPBA champion Dominic Barrett (left), currently the No. 2 in the European Bowling Tour men's point ranking, was second to Karlsson in Squad 15 with 1458 (243 average). Barrett improved his previous high score (1391) by 67 pins and leaped one spot to third place.

    Fellow PBA champion Stuart Williams (right) led Squad 16 with 1438 (239.87) to move into fourth place in the overall standings. The former World Ranking Masters champion had a slow start but closed out his six-game series with 258, 244, 288 and 257 (1047 for four games; 261.75 average).

    2012EBT11RobThurlby.jpg2012EBT11MassimilianoCelli.jpgRob Thurlby (left) slipped from second to fifth place with 1435. Stavros Parasakis of Greece, who was third in Squad 15 with 1434 (239.00), overtook sixth place and was followed by Chris Klerk of the United States in seventh place with 1392.

    Rounding out the top eight, who will receive two byes for the finals, is currently the best Italian bowler, Massimiliano Celli (right), with 1388 or an average of 231.33.

    Thomas Larsen of Denmark and Marek Talpa of the Czech Republic were second and third to Williams in Squad 16 en route to move into 12th and 16th place with 1358 and 1351, respectively.

    Just outside the top 16, who will bypass the first round of the finals, was Squad 17 leader Robert Andersson (right). The world champion from Sweden toppled 1347 pins (224.50) but fell four pins short.

    Laurence Gaillard of France is the only woman above the cut line in 32nd place with 1318 including handicap. Gaillard has a slim three-pin cushion over 35th place PBA Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli (below right) of Venezuela, who is "on the bubble" with 1314 or an average of 219.

    2012EBT11SanMarinoOpenBanner1_small.jpg The 8th Storm San Marino Open is the 11th stop of the 2012 European Bowling Tour and the second out of four EBT "Gold" tournaments this season. The tournament will be held July 7-15 at 18-lane Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino and offers total prize fund of 60.200 Euro with 10.000 Euro going to the winner, 6.000 to the runner-up and 3.400 each to the third and fourth place finisher.

    The San Marino Open features a 40 feet Kegel lane conditioning pattern with 24.3ml volume oil total.

    The qualifying of the San Marino Open (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) runs from Saturday July 7 through Saturday, July 14 with the last qualifying squad 21 scheduled for 9 p.m. CEST. The qualifying winner will receive a 1.000 Euro bonus.

    Qualifying concludes with the one-game Desperado Squad scheduled to start at half past Midnight. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire tournament, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 48 players will advance to the finals on Sunday, July 15 - the top 35 players from the overall qualifying standings plus the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 7-8, the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 9-10, the top 4 from the squads conducted on July 11-12, and the top 3 from the Desperado Squad. The top 8 qualifiers receive two byes and qualifiers 9-16 get one.

    The other 32 players will bowl four games from scratch to cut to the top 16, who will meet qualifiers 9-16 in round two. Those 24 bowl another 4 games from scratch to cut to the top 8, who will join the top eight qualifiers in single-elimination match play with the two game total pinfall determining the winner.

    The highest seeded player bowls the lowest seeded, the second-highest seeded players bowls the second-lowest and so on. The field will be cut to 8, 4 then 2, who will bowl for the title and the 10.000 Euro top prize.

    2012EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2012 European Bowling Tour is made up of 21 events in 16 countries including two Platinum, four Gold, eight Silver and seven Satellite tournaments.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish in the event. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament such as the San Marino Open 2012 gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament gets 50 ranking points.

    Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 16 men and top 16 women who will compete in the sixth EBT Masters in Bratislava, Slovakia in Sept. 2013.
