United States girls win Doubles gold in American Zone Youth Championships

By Kevin Hazaert -- Bryanna Caldwell and Emily Maier (l-r) knew it would take a team effort for the Junior Team USA duo to get their first gold medals at the 2006 American Zone Youth Bowling Championships on Monday.
What they got out of each other was a consistent performance that resulted in exactly what they set out to accomplish.
Caldwell, Tucson, Ariz., and Maier, Sparks, Nev., turned in six-game scores of 1,198 and 1,197, respectively, to combine for 2,395 and a gold medal in the girls doubles competition at Bol La Noria Pro.
Never extraordinarily high nor low, Caldwell had a top score of 225 and low of 177 while Maier had extremes of 221 and 182. It allowed them to set the pace from the start - combining for 423 in Game 1 and 417 in Game 2.
"I couldn't be happier, especially winning it with one of my teammates," said Caldwell, 20. "It's a better feeling to win gold with someone instead of by yourself. We bowled great ... we started and finished strong."
Maier shot 221 in the final game and Caldwell posted 201, plenty good enough to keep the challengers at a safe distance.
"That last game, I felt like we were out there just to bowl," said Maier, 19, who was playing a tight line up 10 on the long oil pattern and switched over to her Brunswick Vapor later on to prevent early ball roll. "We were both lined up, both feeling good. It was a great ball change, too. Good call, Coach Rod (Ross)."
Canada's Felicia Wong and Jennifer Besana combined to shoot 465 in the final game to take silver with 2,302. They jumped over teammates Casondra Campbell and Kodee Pilling, who finished with bronze at 2,290. A turning point for Caldwell came in Game 4 on lanes 7 and 8, where she had opened via splits in her first three attempts on lane 7 and was failing to carry on lane 8. Knowing she had to grind it out, Caldwell struck on five of her last six shots for a respectable 177 to maintain their lead.
"I kept with it," said Caldwell, a first-team National Tenpin Coaches Association at Central Missouri State University this past season. "I had to do what I could to punch out ... then get off that pair."
Junior Team USA's Kayla Bandy, Danville, Va., and Rose Brown, Modesto, Calif., finished seventh with 2,214 - Bandy shooting 1,189 while Brown had 1,025.
Competition continues Tuesday with the six-game team event. The American Zone Championships features nine countries and nearly 100 athletes, consisting of five disciplines (singles, doubles, team, all-events and Masters). Individual totals from singles, doubles, and team are combined to determine the all-events winner. The top 12 in all-events also advance to Masters play on Wednesday and Thursday.
