Mik Stampe wins Squad 6 to earn last automatic berth into Vienna Open finals

    Dane shoots 1346 to move into fourth place; USA's Tanner Spacey uses 296 game to leap into ninth place; cut for 52nd place is now 1160 (193.33 average)

    2012EBT16MikStampe.jpg 2012EBT16DanMacLelland.jpgDanish national team member Mik Stampe (pictured left) led the sixth qualifying squad at the 10 Columbia 300 Vienna Open with 1346 total and an average of 224.33 en route to earn the last automatic berth into Sunday's finals.

    Stampe had a pair of 257s and games of 204, 226, 184 and 226 un his series, which propelled him unto fourth place in the overall qualifying standings.

    The first player from each of the first six squads who doesn't finish qualifying in the top 52 will receive a wildcard for the finals. From Squad 7 on players must finish in the top 52 to survive the qualifying cut.

    2012EBT16ClaraGuerrero.jpg2012EBT16KellyKulick.jpgDan MacLelland (above right) of Canada led the field of 172 bowlers from 21 countries after the second day of qualifying with 1400 (233.33). The PBA bowler and Clara Juliana Guerrero (left) of Colombia also led in Doubles with 2666 (218.17).

    Kelly Kulick (right), United States, currently the No. 3 in the women's World Bowling Tour point ranking, remained in second place with 1358. Kulick, who made sports history by winning the 2010 PBA Tournament of Champions to become the first woman to win a PBA Tour event, recently won the gold medal in the World Singles Championships.

Riku Petteri Kivelae (left) of Finland fell to fifth place with 1327. Rounding out the top 8, who will receive one bye for the finals, were Austrians Leo Grundschober in sixth place with 1316, Alexander Rauscher in seventh place with 1312 and Daniel Hahn in eighth place with 1310.

    Tanner Spacey (right), United States, who had the tournament high game of 296 in his fourth game of Squad 6, leaped into ninth place overall with 1308. The 18-year-old has cashed ranking points in the last three consecutive EBT events.

    With 172 players from 21 countries in the books, Gergely Kapronczay holds the 52nd and last place to advance with 1160 or an average of 193.33.

    Guerrero & MacLelland held on to the lead in Doubles with 2666 and an average of 218.17. The Canadian is also in second place with partner Thomas Gross of Austria with 2547 total. Third place belonged to Kulick & reigning PBA Player of the Year, Sean Rash, United States, with 2539.

    Qualifying continues on Thursday with Squads 7, 8 and 9 scheduled for noon, 4 and 8 p.m. CEST.

    2012VOLogo.jpg The 10th Columbia 300 Vienna Open is the 16th stop of the 2012 European Bowling Tour and the last of four EBT "Gold" tournaments (the second-highest category) this season. Players will compete for an increased total prize fund of 75.130 Euro (approx. $100,000) - 64.900 € for Singles and 10.230 € for the Doubles event.

    The singles champion will receive the 7.000 € top prize, the runner-up earns 5.000 and the third and fourth-place finishers get 3.500 and 2.500 Euro, respectively. The doubles champions will split 1.600 €.

    The 10th Columbia 300 Vienna Open will also award a PBA Tour title if won by a PBA member or a PBA international member.

    The tournament will be contested on 39 ft. oil pattern with 27.1 ml volume oil total (Kegel LaneMap™ Guide Plus Bowling Vienna).

    The qualifying of the Vienna Open is traditionally contested as a Doubles tournamentwhich runs from Tuesday, Oct. 2 through Saturday, Oct. 6 with the final Squad 17 starting at 8 p.m. local time (CEST). Qualifying concludes with the one-game Desperado Squad slated for 11.30 p.m. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, a standard on the European Bowling Tour

    A total of 64 players will qualify for the Vienna Open finals on Sunday, Oct. 7:
    • the top 52 players from the overall qualifying standings
    • the first player each from Squad 1-6, who is not among the top 52 (total 6 players)
    • and the top 6 from the Desperado Squad.

    The top 8 qualifying leaders will bypass the first round of the finals. The other 56 players will bowl six games starting from scratch to cut to the top 22, who will join the top qualifiers in Round Two.

    Those 30 players will bowl another six games starting from scratch after which the field will be trimmed to the top 18, who will carry the pinfall forward into Round Three. After another six-game block the top 4 players with the highest 12-game total will advance to the stepladder finals.

    Bowling fans around the world will be able to watch the stepladder finals on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 5 p.m. CEST (11.00 a.m. EDT; 11.00 p.m. Hong Kong Time) live on Bowlingdigital TV. The award ceremonies are scheduled for 6.00 p.m. CET. The live streaming coverage is a partnership between Bowlingdigital.com, Austrian Bowling Federation, Plus Bowling, Columbia 300 and Ottakringer, the official beer of the Vienna Open.
