Bol La Noria Pro in Puebla, Mexico (June 9-16, 2006)

Jessica Santiago of Puerto Rico (center) won two matches en route to claim the Girls Masters title in the 11th American Zone Youth Championships at Bol La Noria Pro in Puebla, Mexico.

In the opening match of the three-player stepladder final, second-seeded Santiago denied Canadian Felicia Wong's (right) bid for her third individual gold in a 177-176 nail-biter.

The Puerto Rican then topped No. 1 seed Ana Isabel Gonzalez Gonzalez (left), Mexico, 428-385, over two games total pinfall to seal the victory. First block leader Patricia De Faria, Venezuela, missed the stepladder by 13 pins to finish fourth.

Patricia De Faria leads girls Masters after the first block

 

Venezuela's Patricia De Faria leads the girls Masters after the first six-game block in the 11th American Zone Youth Championships at Bol La Noria Pro in Puebla, Mexico.

De Faria felled 1,279 pins and compiled a 5-1 won-loss record. Competitors are awarded 10 points for each match play victory and five for a tie.

In second and third place are Mexico's Ana Isabel Gonzalez Gonzalez and Daniela Alvarado Nava with 1,271 and 1,201, respectively.

Singles and All Events champion Felicia Wong, Canada, is fourth with 1195. Emily Maier is fifth at 1,187 to lead Junior Team USA entrants.

Competition concludes Thursday with the final six games of the 12-game, round-robin portion of the Masters event, after which the field is trimmed to the top three in each division for the stepladder finals. The No. 3 seed will bowl the No. 2 seed in a one-game match with the winner advancing to face the No. 1 seed in a two-game, total-pins match for the gold medal.
