Finland's Petteri Salonen earns high qualifier honors at Brunswick Italia Challenge

    Saturday's qualifying leaders Williams, Barrett & Jensen land in 2nd, 3rd and 4th place; USA's Ed Smaglik hits cutoff number for 36th place (1321; 220.17 average)

    2012EBT01PetteriSalonen.jpg2012EBT16StuartWilliams3.jpgPetteri Salonen (pictured left) of Finland finished the qualifying of the Brunswick Italia Challenge atop the leaderboard to lead 52 players into the finals on Sunday, July 7, at Bowling Red & Black in Asti, Italy.

    Salonen had games of 209, 182, 298, 269, 257 and 232 in Squad 14 to lead the 254-player field from 25 countries with 1447 and an average of 241.17.

    Three of the four squad leaders from Saturday positioned themselves in second thru fourth place in the overall standings. England's PBA champion Stuart Williams (right) and Dominic Barrett (below left), who posted 1440 and 1437 in squads 21 and 22, missed the top qualifying spot by mere seven and ten pins.

    2013EBT04DominicBarrett.jpg2013EBT04MaiGingeJensen.jpgWorld champion Mai Ginge Jensen (right) of Denmark, who led the morning Squad 20 with 1432 including 48 pins handicap, was the best of 37 women in fourth place. Total eight women survived the first cut.

    Rounding out the top eight, who earned two byes, were Marek Talpa, Czech Republic (5th, 1427), Thomas Larsen, Denmark (6th, 1419), Nina Kovanen, Finland (7th, 1418) and Yoan Alix, France (8th, 1416).

    Paul Moor of England, who won his 12th career European Bowling Tour title in the Brunswick Madrid Challenge last weekend, and Squad 23 leader David Canady of Germany finished in 9th and 10th place with 1414 and 1408, respectively.

    Marco Reviglio and Davide Spagnoli, who owns the tournament's lone 300 game so far, were the top Italian bowlers in 13th and 16 place with 1379 and 1363, resp. Ed Smaglik, United States, hit the cutoff number for 36th place with 1321 or an average of 220.17 average. The top 36 will be joined in the finals by another 16 players, who qualified thru "Early Bird" squads, "Turbo games" 5 and 6, and the "Desperado Squad".

    2012BrunswickItaliaChallengeLogo_small.jpg The 2013 Brunswick Italia Challenge is the 9th stop of the 2013 European Bowling Tour and the fourth and last EBT "Silver" tournaments this season. The tournament will be held from June 9 through July 7 at 24-lane Bowling Red & Black in Asti, Italy.

    The BIC offers total prize fund of 51.600 Euro with 10.000 Euro going to the winner, 5.000 Euro to the runner-up and 3.000 Euro to the third place finisher.

    Qualifying of the Italia Challenge 2013 (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) ran from Saturday, June 29 through Saturday, July 6. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire tournament, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 52 players advanced to the finals including the top 36 qualifiers, six players each from a separate leaderboard of the squads contested June 29 & 30 and July 1 thru 3, one player each from Turbo game 5 and 6 (extra entry fee) and the top 2 players of the Desperado Squad. The top 8 qualifiers received two byes.

    Two four-game rounds will trim the field to 24 and then 8 players, who will meet the top eight qualifiers in eliminator-format rounds which will feature three two-game rounds.

    All four players bowl the opening two-game series, with the lowest-scoring player being eliminated. In the two rounds to follow, the same "low man out" format applies. The four group winners will bowl for the title and a 10.000 Euro first prize in three games round robin match play (20 bonus per win, 10 for a tie, 10 bonus for each game over 250).

    2013EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2013 European Bowling Tour consists of 19 tournaments in 13 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, four Silver and seven Satellite events.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament such as the Italia Challenge earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament gets 50 ranking points.

    Points are tabulated throughout the season and the top 12 men and the top 12 women qualify for the seventh EBT Masters to be held March 3, 2014 at Dolfijn Bowling in Tilburg, Netherlands immediately following the EBT Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament 2014.

    Top 36 qualifiers, six players each from a separate leaderboard of the squads contested July 1 thru 3 (places 37-42) and June 29 & 30 (places 43-48), one player each from Turbo game 5 & 6 (places 49 & 50) plus the top 2 players of the Desperado Squad (places 51 & 52) will advance to finals on Sunday, July 7. The top 8 qualifiers will receive two byes.
