World Ranking Masters champion Diandra Asbaty (pictured left) went all the way from the last seed in the stepladder finals to the women's division champion Sunday at the 2007 Panama Invitational Tournament.
Asbaty climbed the ladder, beating four tough opponents to win the $15,000 first-place check. In the championship match she started with six consecutive strikes and defeated fellow American Kelly Kulick (right), 268-203, to win the title.
Kulick ran into some bad luck in the championship match, leaving four 9 pins and a 4 pin in the loss. Asbaty, meanwhile, delighted the crowd with her six-bagger to start before leaving a solid 8 pin on the seventh shot.
In all, Asbaty had to win four matches to claim the title. In the opener, she defeated Canada's Robin Orlikowski (left), 248-183. Orlikowski missed a 10 pin early and couldn't recover.
In the second game, Canadian left-hander Felicia Wong (righht) was no match for Asbaty in a 236-201 loss. Asbaty went ahead after just one frame and cruised to the victory.
Asbaty's toughest match came against Liz Johnson (left) in a battle to meet Kulick in the championship game. Asbaty stepped up in the final frame needing nine, spare, strike to secure victory. After leaving a 10 pin and making it, Asbaty made a perfect shot to shut Johnson out.
