Denny’s PBA Tour exempt player Mike Wolfe (pictured left) defended his top seed in the stepladder finals, winning the open division championship at the 2007 Panama Invitational Tournament on Sunday.

Wolfe fired a nearly unbeatable 279 in the championship game, which was more than enough to top Mike Scroggins’ 215 game and earn the $40,000 first prize.

Wolfe (right) thrilled the standing-room only crowd by starting the championship match with six strikes in a row before leaving a solid 10 pin. He then threw the final five strikes to close out the match.

Scroggins (left) struggled early in the title match, starting with a strike but then making two spares before leaving a 7-10 split in the fourth frame.

By that point, he was already behind by 54 pins.

Two-handed lefty Cassidy Schaub (right) tried to copy Diandra Asbaty and make a run from the bottom seed, but ran into a road block when he met Scroggins.

Schaub trailed by 42 pins by the third frame and never recovered in a 248-182 loss.

In the opening two matches, though, Schaub was a crowd favorite with his unique delivery, starting the opening match with six strikes before a 7 pin stopped him cold in a 248-246 thrilling victory over Brian Kretzer (left).

Schaub picked up where he left off again in Match 2, this time starting with seven strikes before a light 7-9 split ended his bid for a perfect game. His strong start in that game was more than enough to defeat Mark Scroggins (right),  246-199.
