Consistency pays off for Japanese women team at 21st Asian Championships

    Lead Korea and Singapore halfway through the six-game team event

    Japan's Misaki Mukotani, Yukari Homma, Rina Asada, Haruka Matsuda and Kanako Ishimine took the lead in the women's five-player Team event at the 21st Asian Championships due to bowling the most consistent block of three games on short oil Friday morning at Khalifa Bowling Center in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

    The fivesome had games of 982, 1076 and 1040 to lead the field of ten countries with 3098 total, a 206.53 average, as the event has reached its halfway point. Matsuda led the team with the field-best 724 series including a 280 game, the highest game of the day and was followed by Mukotani (643), Ishimine (607), Homma (565) and Asada (559).

    With three games on medium oil to go, Japan holds a 25-pin lead over defending champion Korea. Son Yun-Hee, Hwang Sun-Ok, Hong Su-Yeon, Jeon Eun-Hee and Gye Min-Young took the early lead with a 1074 game but fell behind due to 914 in the second game. The Koreans rebounded with 1085 to overtake second place with 3073 and an average of 204.87.

    Doubles gold medalists Bernice Lim and Daphne Tan led their team mates Tan Yan Ling, Fok Ka Wai and Kristel Oh to third place with 3052 (203.47). The Singaporeans sandwiched 1122, the highest team game of the day, between sup-par 973 and 957 games.

    Australia with Singles champion Lexi Nicoll was 59 pins behind in fourth place with 2993 (199.53) with Indonesia fifth (2915) and Malaysia sixth (2911).

    2011AsCW1HwangSunOk2.jpg2010BWCDaphneTan3.jpgKorea's Hwang Sun-Ok (pictured left) maintained a 20-pin lead over Singapore's Daphne Tan (right) in All Events after 21 out of 24 games (combined results of Singles, Doubles, Trios and Team) with 4623 and an average of 220.14. Son Yun-Hee, Korea, overtook Siti Shazwani, Malaysia, to sit in third place with 4541. Shazwani is tied with Misaki Mukotani, Japan, at 4521.

    The 62 women from 12 countries - Australia, Bahrain, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and UAE - will return Friday afternoon for the second block on medium oil.

    The top 16 in All Events (total 24 games) will advance to the Masters finals, which will conclude the 21st Asian Championships on Saturday and Sunday.
