Korea beats USA to win the prestigious Team gold

2014MWCTeamGoldKorea.jpgIn the title match of the five-player Team event Saturday evening at Khalifa International Bowling Center in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Korea outduelled three-time Men’s World Championships Team champion United States, 1097-1088, to capture their first gold medal in the prestigious event.

The Americans, who won the title in 2006 in Busan, Korea; 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand and 2010 in Munich, Germany, took an early lead as the Koreans opened twice in the first frame.

The Asian Games Team champion, which had never won the coveted Team gold in a World Championship, levelled the match in fourth frame and it was nip and tuck through the game as both teams matched each other.

2014MWCTeamSilverUSA.jpgPark Jongwoo, Choi Bokeum, Hong Haesol, Shin Seunghyeon and Kang Heewon, who replaced Kim Kyungmin after the semi-finals, took a slim lead into the last frame as Mike Fagan, Chris Barnes, Bill O’Neill, Sean Rash and Tommy Jones suffered two open frames in the 9th.

Doubles champions Park and Choi, who won gold in All-Events at the end of the Team preliminaries earlier today, led Fagan and Barnes by 44 pins. O’Neill struck out in the 10th to narrow the gap to 17 pins as Shin failed to strike on his first ball.

When Rash doubled in his last frame and Hong failed to spare the 2-4-7 combination, the Americans led by one pin with only the anchors yet to bowl. Working on a five-bagger, Kang needed a strike on his first shot and an eight-count for a shut-out.

When Kang left a stone 8 on his first ball, Jones needed two strikes and a nine to win the match. Jones, who secured the gold medal in 2010 with a strike in the 10th frame against Finland, struck on his first shot but left a solid 10 on his next ball, which gave the advantage back to the Koreans.

Kang spared the 8-pin and wrapped up the title with a strike on the fill ball. With the victory the Koreans took revenge for a 49-39 defeat in a in the one-player, ninth-and-10th frame roll-off in the title match of the 2008 Men’s World Championships.

The U.S. team fired 43 strikes to fly past No. 2 Sweden (right) with Robert Andersson, Martin Paulsson, Joachim Karlsson, Jesper Svensson and Martin Larsen, 1236-985.

The U.S. Team received the silver medal. Australia and Sweden shared the bronze medal.

The 2014 Men’s World Championships conclude on Sunday with the Masters competition. The top 24 in All-Events (combined scores in Singles, Doubles, Trios and Teams) bowl six games starting at 9.00 Gulf Standard Time (GST) with the 24-game All-Events total being carried forward.

The top 8 after 30 games bowl an additional seven games round robin match play (no position round match) before the cut to the top 4, who will advance to the medal round. No. 1 will bowl No. 4 and No. 2 meets No. 3 in a one-game semi-final match. The winners bowl for gold and silver while the losers share the bronze medal.

2014MWCLogo2.jpg2014WorldBowlingLogo.jpgThe 2014 World Tenpin Bowling Association Men’s World Championships will be held from December 4-15 at 40-lane Khalifa International Bowling Center in Zayed Sports City, Abu Dhabi, UAE. 272 players from 49 countries participate in the event.

The Championships, hosted by World Bowling Tenpin, the Emirates Bowling Federation and Zayed Sports City, is open to all WTBA Member Federations who are currently paid up members of World Bowling and their respective zone (PABCON, ETBF, and ABF).

Maximum six men per country compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, Trios, five-player Teams, All-Events and Masters in the 9-day competition (Dec. 6-14).

2014MWCAtlanta38.jpg2014MWCTokyo43.jpgIn accordance with the World Bowling Tenpin Playing Rules, the 2014 Men’s World Championships will be contested on two lane conditioning pattern, the 38 ft. Atlanta pattern and the 43 ft. Tokyo pattern, a medium and a long pattern from the World Bowling bank of patterns.

The Championships are the fourth World Championships for men only since the world’s governing body for the sport of tenpin bowling has decided at the WTBA congress in the year 2003 to split the men’s and women’s events .

The 2006 MWC took place in Busan, Korea (on 33 ft. Sydney and 43 ft. Tokyo pattern), and was followed by Bangkok, Thailand in 2008 (on 34 ft. Stockholm and 43 ft. Tokyo pattern) and Munich, Germany in 2010 (38 ft. Atlanta and 43 ft. Tokyo pattern).
