In addition to being a PBA50 Tour competitor and pro shop operator in Columbus, Ohio, Tom Carter (pictured) has a hidden talent: he grew up as the son of a well-known auctioneer in Peoria, Ill., and acquired some of his father’s skills in the process.
On Saturday, Carter served as “guest auctioneer” at a fund-raising auction during the annual meeting of the Mail Pouch Barnstormers, a small group of dedicated volunteers who are trying to preserve and restore historic Mail Pouch Tobacco signs and barns across the east-central United States.
Carter’s efforts helped the Barnstormers raise nearly $700, which helped pay for the restoration of an historic Mail Pouch sign on a barn located in Barkcamp State Park near Belmont, Ohio.
Reigning USBC Masters champion Anthony Simonsen (pictured with AMF Garland GM Bart Bonoil, right) from Austin, Texas, defeated Dino Castillo of Highland Village, Texas, 213-210, to win his fourth PBA Regional title Sunday in the inaugural PBA AMF Garland Southwest Open presented by Classic Products and Ultimate Bowling Products in Garland, Texas.
Simonsen and Castillo were error-free until both strung three strikes going into the 10th frame. When Castillo failed to strike in his last frame, Simonsen claimed the $2,700 first place check.
Simonsen, who qualified in fourth place, received byes into the Round of 8. In his first best-of-three-game match, he defeated amateur Clint Johnson of Fort Worth, 2-0, and then edged Mike Bailey of Irving, Texas, 205-202, in the one-game semifinal round.
After qualifying in 10th place, Castillo got by Adam Pogge of Austin, Texas, 2-1, in the Round of 16; PBA Tour champion D.J. In the first stepladder match, Nathan Bohr of Austin, Texas, defeated Tom Daugherty of Riverview, Fla., 246-238. In the semifinal match, Evans eliminated Bohr, 233-191. Matthews, bowling in his first event as an adult, completed his wire-to-wire victory to earn $3,000. He doesn’t receive a PBA title, however, because he isn’t a member.
