Xtra Frame’s coverage of the final PWBA Tour event of the 2016 season is set for Friday and Saturday with coverage of the preliminary rounds of the Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship from Uptown Alley in Midlothian Va.
The PWBA Tour Championship will feature a field of 16 PWBA champions and points leaders. It will conclude with live stepladder finals on CBS Sports Network on Sunday, Sept. 4.
Immediately following the PWBA finale, PBA Tour action resumes with the qualifying and match play rounds of the PBA Wolf, Badger, Bear and Detroit Open tournaments. The PBA Fall Swing events will be covered beginning Monday, Sept. 5, and continuing through Thursday, Sept. 8.
In addition to being a PBA50 Tour competitor and pro shop operator in Columbus, Ohio, Tom Carter (pictured) has a hidden talent: he grew up as the son of a well-known auctioneer in Peoria, Ill., and acquired some of his father’s skills in the process.
On Saturday, Carter served as “guest auctioneer” at a fund-raising auction during the annual meeting of the Mail Pouch Barnstormers, a small group of dedicated volunteers who are trying to preserve and restore historic Mail Pouch Tobacco signs and barns across the east-central United States.
Carter’s efforts helped the Barnstormers raise nearly $700, which helped pay for the restoration of an historic Mail Pouch sign on a barn located in Barkcamp State Park near Belmont, Ohio.
Reigning USBC Masters champion Anthony Simonsen (pictured with AMF Garland GM Bart Bonoil, right) from Austin, Texas, defeated Dino Castillo of Highland Village, Texas, 213-210, to win his fourth PBA Regional title Sunday in the inaugural PBA AMF Garland Southwest Open presented by Classic Products and Ultimate Bowling Products in Garland, Texas.
Simonsen and Castillo were error-free until both strung three strikes going into the 10th frame. When Castillo failed to strike in his last frame, Simonsen claimed the $2,700 first place check.
Simonsen, who qualified in fourth place, received byes into the Round of 8. In his first best-of-three-game match, he defeated amateur Clint Johnson of Fort Worth, 2-0, and then edged Mike Bailey of Irving, Texas, 205-202, in the one-game semifinal round.
After qualifying in 10th place, Castillo got by Adam Pogge of Austin, Texas, 2-1, in the Round of 16; PBA Tour champion D.J. Archer, 2-0 in the Round of 12; PBA Southwest Region Hall of Famer Chris Barnes from Double Oak, Texas, 2-0, in the Round of 8, and he completed his climb to the championship match by defeating Latvia’s Diana Zavjalova, now living in Austin, Texas, 193-170, in the semifinal round.
Ashly Galante (right) of Palm Harbor, Fla., won the PWBA-PBA Fayetteville Open and non-member James Matthews of Prattville, Ala., won the PBA Fayetteville South Open presented by MOTIV in a doubleheader for women and men at LaFayette Lanes in Fayetteville, N.C., over the weekend.
Galante had a 4-0 match play record and 2,667 total pins for 12 games to win the PWBA-PBA women’s event, topping non-member Tiffany Novy of Wake Forest, N.C., by 86 pins. Galante earned $1,260 for the win and Novy received $800 for her second place finish.
Matthews, the top qualifier, defeated Jeff Evans of Supply, N.C. in the title match, 241-190. In the first stepladder match, Nathan Bohr of Austin, Texas, defeated Tom Daugherty of Riverview, Fla., 246-238. In the semifinal match, Evans eliminated Bohr, 233-191. Matthews, bowling in his first event as an adult, completed his wire-to-wire victory to earn $3,000. He doesn’t receive a PBA title, however, because he isn’t a member.
Josh Blanchard of Mesa, Ariz., defeated Michael Haugen Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz., 257-196, to win the PBA Aquimo West Open presented by Columbia 300 at Mesa East Bowl in Mesa, Ariz., on Sunday, collecting his 10th QubicaAMF PBA Regional title along with a $3,000 prize.
In the semifinal round, Blanchard defeated non-member Chris Klerk of Chandler, Ariz., 204-150, while Haugen defeated Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., 200-188, to set up the championship match. Haugen earned $1,500 for second place. Klerk and Jones each earned $1,100 as semifinal round loser.
