Qualifying leader John Janawicz pockets $2,000 on Day 3

John Janawicz followed in the footsteps of teammate Diandra Asbaty when he pocketed 2,000 Dollar for winning the men's World Ranking Masters qualifying as well as the third squad on long and short oil condition. The 2-time ABC Tournament champion shot the field-best 1919-series today to finish atop the 25-player field with 5577, 24-game total and an average of 232,38.
"JJ", decorated by some friends with his $2,000 bonus, will meet Malaysian champion Daniel Lim in the best-of-three-game single elimination quarterfinals on Friday. Lim averaged 217,54 over the last three days and felled 5221 pins.
Janawicz overtook previous leader Pasi Uotila from Finland by three pins in the penultimate game thanks to a 277-score. The Finn, who won the long-oil squad yesterday, rebounded with a 238 in his last game but the American countered with 237 to win by two pins!
Uotila took the No. 2 seed with 5575 and 232,29 average. His opponent in the opening match of the men's quarterfinals is his compatriot Jouni Helminen. The former professional and 3-time European champion ended the 24-game prelims in 7th place with 5313 (221,38).
The third of as many Finns in the field, Kimmo Lehtonen, was the top southpaw in third place. The organizer of the famous Ballmaster Open toppled 5454 pins, an average of 227,25. He takes on Swede Anders Öhman, who won the World Ranking Masters 2003 here at the Kegel Bowling Center in Lake Wales, FL. "Linus" was on the bubble after six games but shot the tournament high game of 299 in the seventh to book his spot in the finals. Öhman's 5325 pinfall total and 221,88 average was good enough for sixth place overall.
England's Stuart Williams ended up in fourth place with 5414 and an average of 225,58. He led the squad till game #6 before Janawicz took over the lead and never looked back. Williams meets Arturo Hernandez in the quarterfinals. The Venezuelan, who led after day 1 on the short oil pattern, checked in with 5354 total and an average of 223,08.
Manuel Otalora from Colombia and Wu Siu Hong from Hong Kong cashed $1,000 and $500 for finishing 9th and 10th, respectively. The 25 men averaged 213,3 overall for the three blocks on multiple lane condition - 210,88 on short oil, 216,19 on long oil and 212,85 on both short and long on alternate lanes. Two Americans, five Europeans and one Asian bowler will determine the 2005 men's World Ranking Masters champion.
