Clara Guerrero wins 2005 Women's World Ranking Masters
05/01/05
Clara Juliana Guerrero defeated Wendy Chai from Malaysia, 2-1, in the best-of-three-game finals en route win the 2005 Women's World Ranking Masters here at the Kegel Bowling Center in Lake Wales, Fla.
As in the quarter and semifinals, the 23-year-old from Armenia, Colombia, came back from being down 0-1. Chai, 27, struck on five consecutive shots in frames 6-10 to take the first game, 235-219. The reigning Asian Tournament of Champions queen held a slim lead in the mid of game #2, but tides turned when she missed to convert a baby split in the 7th frame.
Guerrero, who won the Intercollegiate Bowling Championship title with Wichita State earlier this month, took full advantage and shot a turkey to level the match. As the Colombian had chosen to start on the short oil pattern, the deciding match was back on lane 9 (they bowled European style, due to TV requirements) on short oil (35 ft.).
Guerrero started out commandingly with double-spare-double, while Chai suffered back-to-back open frames in frames 1-2 followed by 4 single pin spares. She changed balls and moved inside and got a strike on her next ball, while Guerrero got a 7-10. Three big splits in the final four frames sealed the fate for Chai despite she spared the 4-9 split. Guerrero sealed the victory with three strikes in frames 7-9 to earn her biggest career title and the $10,000 top prize.
