Kimmo Lehtonen is the 2005 Men's World Ranking Masters Champion
05/01/05
Finn Kimmo Lehtonen, who is being looked at as one of the best lefthanders in the world, topped compatriot Jouni Helminen, 2-1, in the men's championship match to become the 2005 World Ranking Masters Champion.
The spectators at the Kegel Bowling Center and the TV viewers (PBA pro Brian Voss was the color commentator) saw three completely different games. Lehtonen, the higher seed, chose to start on short oil (35 feet) and as he expected Helminen, a former 3-time European champion, struggled. Lehtonen put the game away with a turkey in the mid of the game, 204-159.
After the players moved to lane 10 that was dressed with the long oil pattern (43 feet), Helminen, who has bowled on the PBA Tour the previous years, strung together two four-baggers to level the match with a 253-216 win.

Back on the short oil for the decider, Lehtonen, the only lefty among the top 8 finalists, bowled a clean game including one double. Helminen struggled to get a double and when he opened in the 7th frame his last resort was to change his line. He went far outside and his next two shots resulted in back-to-back gutter balls handing the match to Lehtonen on a silver plate.
