Japan sets new record for three games to take early lead in Trios event Canada's

    Caroline Lagrange rolls second 300 game of the 2011 Women's World Championships

    Japan's Natsuki Sasaki, Haruka Matsuda and Kanako Ishimine (pictured left) rolled games of 719, 677 and 713 en route to lead Squad 1 in the Trios event at the Women's World Championships after the first block on medium oil with record 2109 pinfall total or an average of 234.33.

    Sasaki had 725 and was followed by Matsuda with 697 and Ishimine with 687 to break the previous record of 2071 set by the USA in 1999 by 38 pins.

    Denmark's Kamilla Kjeldsen, Rikke Holm Agerbo and Mai Ginge Jensen finished the first of two squads with the highest game of the day thus far (721) to take second place with 2065 (229.44). All Events leader Mai Ginge Jensen was the best player in Squad 1 with 752 (250.67).

    2011WWCTriosCarolineLagrange300.jpgThird place belonged to Team USA's Stefanie Nation, Shannon Pluhowsky and Shannon O'Keefe, who were 40 pins behind the Danes with 2025 (225 avg.).

    Germany's Nadine Geißler, Birgit Pöppler and Patricia Luoto, who led the 28 trios after the second game, finished in fourth place with 1978 (219.78).

    Canada's Caroline Lagrange (right) closed out her three-game series with the second 300 game of the championships and the fifth in WWC history.

    The 171 players from 33 countries were split into two squads to bowl six games preliminaries in the Trios event - the first three-game block on medium oil and the second three-game block on long oil. The top 4 trios will advance to the finals.

    Squads 1 will start Wednesday at 9 a.m. with Squad 2 to follow at 1 p.m. Hong Kong time. On Thursday Squad 2 will start at 9 a.m. and Squad 1 will bowl at 1 p.m. The semifinals start at 4.30 p.m. with the championship match to follow immediately afterwards.

    Germany (right) with Nadine Geißler (255), Birgit Pöppler (239) and Patricia Luoto (224) was just one pin behind in second place with 718.

    Former PWBA champion and USBC Hall of Famer Carol Gianotti had a huge 267 came to help Australia (below left) into third place with 695. her team mates Rebecca Voukolos and Rebecca Whiting contributed 227 and 201, respectively.

    Fifth place belonged to Denmark (right) with 687. Singles and Doubles bronze medalist Mai Ginge Jensen, who holds a 97-pin lead in All Events at the halfway point averaging 246.50 for 12 games, led the Danes with 247 and was followed by Rikke Holm Agerbo with 243 and Kamilla Kjeldsen with 197.

    Priscilla Maaswinkel, Nicole Sanders and Ghislaine van der Tol of The Netherlands were in eighth place at 661.

    2011WWCTriosFIN1.jpg2003 Trios World Champions Liza Clutario and Liza Del Rosario of The Philippines teamed with Apple Posadas for 660, good for ninth place. Rounding out the top 10 was Finland (right) with Roosa Lundén, Marjo Pöntinen and Krista Pöllänen, who chalked up 651.

    Germany beat Japan in the second game by eleven pins, 688 to 677, to overtake the lead with 1406 total and an average of 234.33. Japan slipped to second place with 1396.

    2011WWCTriosSWE1.jpgTeam USA used a 695 game (O'Keefe 216, Nation 226, and Pluhowsky 253) to leap into third place with 1389. Denmark moved up one spot to fourth place with 1344 behind a 657 game.

    The Filipinas rolled 672 to overtake fifth place with 1332 followed by the Koreans with 1316. 2007 Trios World Champions Nina Flack and Helén Johnsson, who teamed with European Bowling Tour ranking leader Joline Persson-Planefors of Sweden (pictured left) added 688 to the 616 in game one to jump into seventh place with 1304.

    Patcharin Torgersen, Jeanett H Johansen and Heidi Thorstensen of Norway (right) had the highest game in the second with 698 to leap into ninth place with 1293. Australia slipped to tenth place with 1282 behind a 587 game.

    Japan had another 700-plus game to break the championship record for three games en route to lead the Trios event after the first of two squads. Natsuki Sasaki (232), Haruka Matsuda (256) and Kanako Ishimine (225) closed out their three-game series with 713 for with 2109 total and an average of 234.33.

    Third place belonged to the U.S. trio with 2025 after finishing with 636. Germany slipped to fourth place with 1978 due to a sup-par 572 in the last game. The Netherlands were fifth with 1945 and The Philippines were sixth with 1941.

Russia featuring Polina Kosyakova, Zaryana Efimova and Alena Korobkova was ten pins behind in eighth place with 1930 followed by Sweden in ninth place with 1911.

    The players of Squad 1 are done for today and will return on Thursday afternoon for the second block on long oil.

    2011WWCLogo.jpg The fourth Women's World Championships takes place at bowling center Hong Kong Bowling City in Hong Kong, China, from Sept. 1 through 11, 2011.

    171 of the best women bowlers in the world featuring 33 countries compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, Trios, five-player Team event, All Events and Masters in the nine-day event.

    The WTBA patterns "Seoul" and "Paris" will be used in Hong Kong. The 39-feet Seoul pattern is the second-shortest of the four "medium" WTBA certified lane patterns. With a length of 47 feet, Paris is the longest of all 12 certified patterns.

    Singles was played on "Paris" and Doubles will be contested on "Seoul", while Trios and Team will feature both oil patterns (3 games on each pattern). Masters match play will be staged on dual lane condition (one lane dressed with the Seoul pattern and the other lane dressed with the Paris pattern).

    The top four players and teams after six games in Singles, Doubles, Trios and Team, respectively, will advance to the semifinals. The No. 1 meet No. 4 and No. 2 takes on No. 3. The winners will determine the World Champion, while the losers will share the bronze medal. All matches are single-game matches.
