Former EBT Ranking Champions Palermaa, Moor overtake the lead in Chandra Open

    Final three qualifying squads to be held Saturday; cut for 30th place is 1262

    201011PBA06OskuPalermaa.jpg2010EBT10PaulMoor.jpgThree European Bowling Tour ranking champions and two Russians set the tone in the qualifying of the Chandra Open 2011 in Friday's Squad 7 and 8 (Squad 9 has been cancelled) at Chandra Bowling in Nieuwegein, Netherlands.

    Osku Palermaa (pictured left), the two-handed PBA champion from Finland, who led the EBT men's rankings from 2007-09, rolled games of 233, 243, 218, 214, 277 and 237 in Squad 7 to overtake lead with 1422 total and an average of 237.

    2004-06 ranking champion Paul Moor (right), England, started his six-game block in Squad 8 with 247, 257, 255, 224 and 220 but had to settle for second place after finishing with 212 and 1415 total (235.83).

    Previous leader Carmen Haandrikman, Netherlands, slipped to third place with 1405 including 48 pins handicap. Russian Andrey Suslov was mere 12 pins behind Moor with 1403 including high games of 256 and 277 to move into fourth place.

Defending EBT ranking champion Dominic Barrett (left), England, had six games between 216 and 237 to move into eighth place with 1362 (227.00). Alexander Medveditskov (right), Russia, was two pins behind with 1360 to leap into ninth place.

    The other four places in the top 10 belong to women. Birgit Pöppler, Germany, was fifth with 1403 and was followed by Dutch Ghislaine van der Tol (1386) and Danielle van der Meer (1380) in sixth and seventh place, respectively. Rounding out the top 10 was Lisanne Breeschoten, Netherlands with 1327.

    With 107 players - 84 men and 23 women - from 13 countries in the books, Ramon Hilferink, Netherlands, holds the 30th and last place to advance with 1262 or an average of 210.33. Just outside looking in was current EBT ranking leader Thomas Larsen, Denmark, with 1253.

    Qualifying continues Saturday, Sept. 24 with Squads 10-12 scheduled for 10 a.m., 2 and 6 p.m. CET and concludes with the Desperado Squad slated for 9.30 p.m.

    2011ChandraOpenLogo.jpg The Chandra Open is a newcomer on the European Bowling Tour and will be held Sept. 19-25, 2011 at 16-lane Chandra Bowling in Nieuwegein, Netherlands, The tournament is the 16th stop of the 2011 Tour and the fifth out of six EBT "Satellite" tournaments this season.

    The tournament offers total prize fund of 24.600 Euro with 5.000 Euro going to the winner and 3.000 Euro to the runner-up, while the third and fourth place finishers will receive 2.000 Euro and 1.000, respectively.

    Since the English Open has lost its EBT status, the 2011 European Bowling Tour consists of 20 tour stops in 16 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, six Silver and six Satellite tournaments.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament such as the Chandra Open gets 50 ranking points.

    The top 16 men and the top 16 women at the end of the 2011 season qualify for the fifth EBT Masters to be held at Dream-Bowl Palace in Unterföhring near Munich, Germany on April 30 and May 1, 2012. The event will become the first EBT Masters to be contested on single lane condition.

    Qualifying of the Chandra Open (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) runs from Monday, Sept. 19 through Saturday, Sept. 24 with the last Squad 12 scheduled for 6 p.m. CET and concludes with the Desperado Squad slated for 9.30 p.m. Women will receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire event, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 38 players will advance to the finals on Sunday, Sept. 25 - the top 30 players from the overall qualifying standings plus the top 4 from a separate leader board of Squad 1-3, and the top 4 from the Desperado Squad. The top 6 qualifiers earn one bye.

    The other 32 players will bowl six games starting from scratch with the top 10 advancing to the second round. The top 10 from Round One and the top six qualifiers will bowl six games starting from scratch to cut to the top 8.

    Those eight will bowl another six-game block with the pinfall from Round Two being carried forward. The player with the highest 12-game total will be declared the winner.
