Daniel Vezis wins qualifying at Chandra Open 2012

    Englishman leads 31 men and seven women into Sunday's finals; cut for 30th place was 1299 (215.50 average)

    2012EBT13DanielVezis.jpg2012EBT04StuartWilliams.jpgDaniel Vezis (pictured left) of England led a field of 124 bowlers from 15 countries to win the qualifying of the Chandra Open 2012 and to lead a group of 38 bowlers, 31 men and seven women, into Sunday's finals at Chandra Bowling in Nieuwegein, Netherlands.

    The former Latvian national team member, who is now playing under his English nationality, toppled 1464 pins, an average of 244, on Friday and remained unchallenged in the last three qualifying squads on Saturday.

    Former World Ranking Masters champion and last year's Chandra Open runner-up Stuart Williams (right), England, averaged 231 in the last Squad (12) to move into fifth place with 1386. Williams, who won his first PBA title in the 2011 PBA World Series of Bowling, had high games of 245, 256 and a 257 in the final game,

Joining the two Englishmen in the elite group were Ben Fishler of Israel (2nd, 1436), Tony Ranta of Finland (3rd, 1424), defending champion Yoan Alix of France (right; 4th, 1392) and Squad 1 leader Oliver Pescher of Germany, who finished in sixth place with 1379 including the tournament's lone 300 game so far.

    Lisanne Breeschoten (left) was not only the best Dutch bowler in seventh place with 1374 including handicap but also the best of 16 women in the field and one of seven, who survived the first cut.

    Michael Holzapfel (left) of Germany led Squad 11 with 1328 (221.33), good for 22nd place overall.

    Nico Joris (right) of Belgium took the 30th and last place to advance with 1299 and an average of 216.50. Joining the top 30 qualifiers in the finals are the next four players of Squads 1-3 and the top four of the one-game Desperado Squad.

    The Chandra Open 2012 will be held Sept. 24-30, 2012 at 16-lane Chandra Bowling in Nieuwegein, Netherlands, The tournament is the 15th stop of the 2012 European Bowling Tour and the fifth out of seven EBT "Satellite" tournaments this season.

    The Chandra Open offers total prize fund of 24.600 Euro with 5.000 Euro going to the winner and 3.000 Euro to the runner-up, while the third and fourth place finishers will receive 2.000 Euro and 1.000, respectively.

    Qualifying of the Chandra Open (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) ran from Monday, Sept. 24 through Saturday, Sept. 29 and concluded with the Desperado Squad. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire event, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 38 players advanced to the finals on Sunday, Sept. 30 - the top 30 players from the overall qualifying standings plus the top 4 from a separate leader board of Squad 1-3, and the top 4 from the Desperado Squad. The top 6 qualifiers earned a first-round bye.

    The other 32 players will bowl six games starting from scratch with the top 10 advancing to the second round. The top 10 from Round One and the top six qualifiers will bowl six games starting from scratch to cut to the top 8.

    Those eight will bowl another six-game block with the pinfall from Round Two being carried forward. The player with the highest 12-game total will be declared the winner.

    The top 30 plus the top 4 from a separate leader board of Squad 1-3 (places 31-34) and the top 4 from the Desperado Squad (places 35-38) advance to the finals. The top 6 qualifiers earn one bye.
