Birgit Pöppler shoots first perfecto of the 10th Columbia 300 Vienna Open

    German international jumps into second place overall with 1466; teams with Stuart Williams to move into second place in Doubles; cut for 52nd place is now 1279 (213.17 average)

    2012EBT16BirgitPoppler.jpgGerman national team member Birgit Pöppler had the first 300 game of the 10th Columbia 300 Vienna Open in Squad 11 on Friday afternoon en route to move into second place in both the overall qualifying standings and the Doubles competition.

    2012EBT16StuartWilliamsBirgitPoppler.jpgPöppler, who finished second in this year's Women's European Championships Masters event, started her series with 238 and achieved perfection in game two. She closed out with 206, 246, 225 and 203 for 1418 scratch, an average of 236.33 for six games, and added 48 pins women's handicap for 1466.

    Pöppler teamed with Stuart Williams of England, who had a solid 1292 set to propel the duo in second place in Doubles with 2758.

    2012EBT16LisanneBreeschoten.jpg2012EBT16OrAviram.jpgWilliams, England's first PBA champion, held on to the lead in Singles with 1544 and an average of 257.33 and also in Doubles with Sweden's Dennis Eklund with 2790 (232.50).

    Another two players surpassed the 1400-mark. Joonas Jähi if Finland and Dutch Lisanne Breeschoten (left) moved into third and fourth place with 1411 and 1410, respectively.

    Two more players, Or Aviram (right) of Israel (6th; 1396) and Jesper Svensson, Sweden (7th; 1388) moved into the top 8, who will bypass the first round of the finals.

Jones teamed with 13-time PBA champion and WTBA World Singles Champion Chris Barnes (l-r) in Squad 11 and rolled a 1378 series. Barnes had 1357 to move into 18th places in Singles and third place in Doubles with 2735.

    With 279 players from 26 countries having completed a six-game block, Jens Grieger of Germany holds the 52nd and last place to advance with 1279 or an average of 213.17. Qualifying continues on Friday with Squads 12 & 13 scheduled for 5 and 9 p.m. CEST. Bowlingdigital.com will provide free Live Streaming of the event.

     





    2012VOLogo.jpg The 10th Columbia 300 Vienna Open is the 16th stop of the 2012 European Bowling Tour and the last of four EBT "Gold" tournaments (the second-highest category) this season. Players will compete for an increased total prize fund of 75.130 Euro (approx. $100,000) - 64.900 € for Singles and 10.230 € for the Doubles event.

    The singles champion will receive the 7.000 € top prize, the runner-up earns 5.000 and the third and fourth-place finishers get 3.500 and 2.500 Euro, respectively. The doubles champions will split 1.600 €.

    The 10th Columbia 300 Vienna Open will also award a PBA Tour title if won by a PBA member or a PBA international member.

    The tournament will be contested on 39 ft. oil pattern with 27.1 ml volume oil total (Kegel LaneMap™ Guide Plus Bowling Vienna).

    The qualifying of the Vienna Open is traditionally contested as a Doubles tournamentwhich runs from Tuesday, Oct. 2 through Saturday, Oct. 6 with the final Squad 17 starting at 8 p.m. local time (CEST). Qualifying concludes with the one-game Desperado Squad slated for 11.30 p.m. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, a standard on the European Bowling Tour

    A total of 64 players will qualify for the Vienna Open finals on Sunday, Oct. 7:
    • the top 52 players from the overall qualifying standings
    • the first player each from Squad 1-6, who is not among the top 52 (total 6 players)
    • and the top 6 from the Desperado Squad.

    The top 8 qualifying leaders will bypass the first round of the finals. The other 56 players will bowl six games starting from scratch to cut to the top 22, who will join the top qualifiers in Round Two.

    Those 30 players will bowl another six games starting from scratch after which the field will be trimmed to the top 18, who will carry the pinfall forward into Round Three. After another six-game block the top 4 players with the highest 12-game total will advance to the stepladder finals.

    Bowling fans around the world will be able to watch the stepladder finals on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 5 p.m. CEST (11.00 a.m. EDT; 11.00 p.m. Hong Kong Time) live on Bowlingdigital TV. The award ceremonies are scheduled for 6.00 p.m. CET. The live streaming coverage is a partnership between Bowlingdigital.com, Austrian Bowling Federation, Plus Bowling, Columbia 300 and Ottakringer, the official beer of the Vienna Open.
