Joonas Jehkinen beats Richard Teece by one pin for the top qualifying spot in Munich

    Jehkinen, Teece and Mrosek shoot 300 in Squad 7; cut for 52nd place is now 1328 (221.33 average)

    2013EBT02RichardTeece.jpg2013EBT04JoonasJehkinen.jpgNational team members Joonas Jehkinen (pictured left) of Finland and Richard Teece (right) of England battled it out for the qualifying lead in the seventh squad of the 10th Brunswick Euro Challenge Thursday night at Europe flagship bowling center, Dream-Bowl Palace in Munich, Germany.

    Both players rolled a perfect game, Jehkinen in the fourth game together with Manuel Mrosek of Germany, who runs the pro shop at Dream-Bowl Palace, and Teece in the fifth game.

    Trailing Teece by 30 pins heading into the last game, the Finn rolled a huge 257 game to overtake the Englishman (226) by one pin. Jehkinen totaled 1470 pins, an average of 245, to lead the field of 218 players from 30 countries into the penultimate qualifying day. Teece moved into second place with 1469.

    2013EBT04SharonKoh.jpg2013EBT04GeryVerbruggen.jpgSharon Koh of Malaysia, who took the lead in the squad before, fell to third place with 1465. Two-hander Jason Belmonte, who had the first 300 game in Squad 6 slipped to fourth place with 1456.

    Squad 1 leader Mika Koivuniemi of Finland was fifth with 1453, while four-time European Bowling Tour point ranking winner Gery Verbruggen (right), Belgium, chalked up 1432 over jump into sixth place.

    Tobias Börding remained the top German bowler in seventh place with 1427. His compatriot Christian Racpan (below left) was fourth in squad 6 with 1414, good for 10th place overall.

    Image2013EBT04OskuPalermaa.jpgReigning PBA Player of the Year Sean Rash, United States, sits in 12th place with 1405. The top 12 at the end of the qualifying will earn one bye for the finals.

    13-time European Bowling Tour champion Osku Palermaa (right) of Finland missed the 1400-mark by one pin to land in 14th place with 1399. Evaggelos Krizinis of Greece started with a 784 three-game series and finished in 15th place with 1395.

    Sami Lampo of Finland and Martin Paulsson of Sweden, who won the gold medal in Doubles with Mathias Ã…rup in the 2010 Men's World Championships at Dream-Bowl Palace, both checked in with 1394. Lampo was seeded 16th and Paulsson 17th due to Lampo's higher last game (225 to 206).

    Among the players below the cut line is Manuel Mrosek of Germany (left), who had to settle for 90th place despite his perfect game.

    Britt Brøndsted (right) of Denmark, who won the first edition of the Brunswick Euro Challenge in the year 2004 in Thessaloniki, Greece, chalked up 1190 pins in her first attempt.

    Qualifying continues Friday, March 22, with Squads 8-11 scheduled for 9 a.m., 1, 5 and 9 p.m. Central European Time.

    2013BECLogo.jpg The Brunswick Euro Challenge is the fourth tournament on the 2013 European Bowling Tour schedule and one of only two "Platinum" events this season, the EBT's highest tournament category. The BEC is also the seventh stop of the World Bowling Tour and the second of three WBT events in Europe in 2013.

    For the first time in 10 years of BEC competition, Europe's richest tournament will be contested at Europe's biggest bowling center, 52-lane Dream-Bowl Palace in Unterföhring near Munich, Germany.

    The 106.000 Euro tournament, which runs from March 19-24, offers a 15.000 Euro top prize and a PBA International title if won by a PBA member.

    At the end of the qualifying, the top 52 plus the top eight players from a separate leader board of the squads on March 19 & 20 (places 53-60) and the top four of the Desperado Squad (places 61-64) will advance to the finals. The top 12 qualifiers will receive one bye.
