Steve Ferraro of Kingston, N.Y. defeated Dave Guindon 218-195 Tuesday night at The Orleans Bowling Center in Las Vegas to win the first of two Lane #1 Matchplay Shootout sweepers and the $2,200 top prize.

When Guindon, W. Seneca, N.Y., failed to strike in his ninth frame, the brother of 1992 PBA Player of the Year and PBA Hall of Famer Dave Ferraro struck out to seal the victory.

Both finalists survived six rounds of match play featuring many big scores including a 300-game by Jeff Campbell in Round One and a 299 (solid 8) by Jason Belmonte of Australia in Round Three. The title match was not the first match in which Ferraro needed to strike out to win the match.

In a third-round thriller against former Team USA member Missy Bellinder, Ferraro needed two strike in the 10th frame to advance. He got the two strikes and a nine-count to win the match … 289-279.

In the semi-finals former U.S. National Amateur champion Scott Norton, son of Hall of Famer Virginia Norton, ended his game with three strikes and nine, but Ferraro countered with three strikes to win by one pin 226-225.

Guindon received $1,500 for finishing second, while Norton, Cypress, Calif. and Rick Taylor, Las Vegas, Nev., pocketed $1,250 each.

There will be a second Matchplay Shootout on Thursday, July 6th. The shootout features a one-game single elimination match play format with no re-entry. If you win your first two matches you double your money and win $400! With a sellout of 280 entries top prize is $5,000!
