Hong Kong's Wu Siu Hong qualifies for Mini-Eliminator finals
07/08/06
Wu Siu Hong, one of the best and most talented players from Asia, advanced to the final of the 13th Annual Mini-Eliminator through the Friday morning squad at 10am.
The Hong Kong international rolled a 682-series to lead the Open Division and to earn one bye for the finals worth $1,000.
Fortunately for Siu Hong, the top scorer of the squad, Marvin Hale from Discovery Bay, Calif., competed in the 35 and under Division. Hale was the best of all 115 bowlers in the 13th of 22 qualifying squads with 707 three-game total. Three more players advanced to the finals from this division.
Don Fowler, Overland Park, Kan., was the squad leader from the 36 to 49 Division with 650. Dr. Dean Chavers, Albuquerque, NM, led the 50 and over Division with 669 followed by PBA legend Larry Lichstein, Ft. Myers, Fla., with 636.
Three players advanced from the 205 and under Division. Brian Martinsen Sr., Vass, NC, got the bye with 611. German Johnny D'Silva had tears in his eyes when learned that his 608-series, his highest of the whole week, was good enough for second place,
Also advancing to the finals was Don Tesh, Winston-Salem, NC, with 603. All advancers to the finals on Sunday are guaranteed $750. D'Silva's compatriot, former German international Peter Wolfschaffner, finished with a huge 257-game but missed the cut by 13 pins in fifth place.
Qualifying continues with two more squads at noon and 2pm.
The Brunswick Shootout will start at 5pm at The Orleans Bowling Center. The Brunswick Shootout is another way to cash at The Mini-Eliminator. Mini-Eliminator entrants have a chance to win over $42,000 in cash prizes and get two new Brunswick balls with free expert drilling (1 ball only).
All bowlers qualifying or buying a spot ($250) into the Brunswick Shootout will bowl three games with any Brunswick ball at 5pm (36 to 49 /50 and over/205 and under divisions) or at 7:30pm (Open Division/35 and under). All will bowl 3 game across 6 lanes with everyone dropping their lowest game (only the highest two games will count). A total of 65 bowlers will advance to the finals on Saturday, July 8th at 7:30pm: The top 13 highest 2 game series from each division.
