Ed Smaglik wins Mini-Eliminator Winter Classic

Ed Smaglik (center) of Flagstaff, Arizona won the 2009 Columbia 300 Mini-Eliminator Winter Classic and the $20,000 at South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa in Las Vegas, Nev. Smaglik doubled in the tenth frame to beat out Steve Brode of Downey, Calif., for the top spot, 231 to 224. Brode almost became the first 205 & under division Mini-Eliminator champion, but suffered an open frame in the 10th to settle for second place, worth $10,000.
Finishing third was the Senior division champion Dick Baker of Henderson, NV who rolled a 205 to earn $5,000.
Other champions in the four-day event were Rick Hara and Canadian Bill Rowe each earning $1,000 for their Early Bird Tournament wins.
A total of 89 bowlers advanced to the Mini-Eliminator finals earning a minimum of $500. More than 90 additional bowlers cashed in the prize fund which paid out over $100,000.
The lane pattern put down by Kegel produced balanced scoring throughout the tournament. There were a total of three perfect games and one 800 series during the Mini. Jeff Garrison (Hawthorne, CA), Brett Wolfe (Scottsdale, AZ) and Rowe all rolled 300 while Tom Smallwood (Flushing, MI) rolled the highest series of the tournament with 805.
The Mini-Eliminator Winter Classic at South Point was presented by Columbia 300 and attracted 862 main event entries plus an additional 278 in the early bird tournaments.
Bowlers from 17 foreign countries and 39 states were represented. The dates for The Mini-Eliminator Summer Classic will be announced shortly.
