Andrew Cain powers his way to gold in Men Singles in Costa Rica

    09/21/05

    2005 AmZ Championship

Metrobowl in San José, Costa Rica - September 18-28, 2005

Andrew Cain of the United States cut through the Men Singles competition at the American Zone Championships like a buzzsaw, winning gold by a wide margin Tuesday. Cain easily won gold by 78 pins with 1344 six-game total and an average of 224. Rafael Medina of Venezuela took silver with 1266 and Mario Valverde of Costa Rica took bronze with 1,262.

Cain, a 23-year-old lefthander from Phoenix, who won the bronze medal in Singles at the World Games two months ago, led the field of 111 players from 20 countries after the first 3-game block with 7365 and never looked back.

"I had to stay focused and stay clean because one bad game can completely take you out of contention," Cain said. "It feels good to bring home the gold." Cain rolled games of 257, 257, 221, 190, 217 and 202 on his way to the title.

Rafael Medina posted the third-highest 672 series on Tuesday to leapfrog from a tied 23rd place to second to claim the silver medal with 1266 and an average of 211. Mario Valverde started the day in 49th place behind a 565-series on Monday. Valverde fired games of 246, 235 and 216 for 697, the highest series of the day, to rocket into third place with 1262.

Valverde's medal was the first by a Costa Rican man in the history of the American Zone Championships. His compatriot Alejandro Reyna, who was second after the first day with 684 including the tournament high game of 290, fell to 15th place behind a 523-series.

Cain races to early Singles lead at American Zone Championships

Now that he has the early lead at the American Zone Championships, United States Bowling Congress Team USA's Andrew Cain of Phoenix has no intention of playing it safe.

Cain set the pace in Singles after three games Monday with a 735 series and plans to be aggressive in the final three games Tuesday at MetroBowl Family Center.

"I'm not too concerned about having the lead because I want to go out and attack tomorrow. I don't want to try to protect the lead," Cain said. "I didn't bowl that great in practice Sunday so it was a nice feeling to come out and bowl really well. Hopefully that can continue."

Cain, who had games of 257, 257 and 221, holds a 51-pin lead over Costa Rica's Alejandro Reyna, who is second with 684. Medal winners will be determined Tuesday after all six games are completed.

Cain was the only Team USA bowler on the men's side to crack the top 10. Rhino Page of San Diego is 14th with 612, Steve Weber of Chalmette, La., is 21st with 596, David Haynes of Las Vegas is 41st with 574, Derek Sapp of Keokuk, Iowa, is 65th with 546 and Erik Vermilyea of Maplewood, Minn., is 74th with 533.

On the women's side, Canada's Julie Johnson-Loyer leads with 650. Lynda Barnes of Flower Mound, Texas, led Team USA with games of 178, 238 and 214 for a 630 series and sits in fourth.

Lisa Noor of Mound, Minn., is next for the United States in sixth with 623. Diandra Asbaty of Chicago is 10th with 617, Amanda Burgoyne of Newport, Minn., is 19th with 589, Shannon Pluhowsky of Phoenix is 23rd with 581 and Jennifer Petrick of Canton, Ohio, is 33rd with 557.
