Isabelle Rioux claims gold in Women Singles at American Zone Championships

    2005 AmZ Championship

Metrobowl in San José, Costa Rica - September 18-28, 2005

Canada claimed the first gold medal in the 14th American Zone Championship at Metrobowl in San José, Costa Rica, but it was not first-block leader Julie Johnson Loyer who walked away the winner. Isabelle Rioux bowled nearly identical 3-game series (639 and 641) to win the Women Singles with 1280 pinfall total and an average of 213,33.

The next three spots belonged to Team USA members. Lynda Barnes and Diandra Asbaty took silver and bronze with 1267 and 1266, respectively. Lisa Noor finished fourth with 1253, mere 13 pins off the top 3. Johnson Loyer, who led the field of 90 women from 18 countries with 650, fell to ninth place with 1207 behind a 557 second set. Defending champion Robin Crawford, Canada, ended up in 27th place with 1122.

Rioux overcame two critical mistakes in the final game to secure gold medal. After missing a single pin in the first frame, Rioux left a 4-6-7 split in the ninth that nearly cost her the top medal. She came back to strike out in the 10th to win the title.

"I knew I had to make a couple shots to win, and I wanted to just make one shot at a time," said Rioux, who is on Team Canada for the third time. "I think I just don't realize right now what it's like to win gold."

Lynda Barnes, who has won two silver and two bronze medals at the Women's World Championships last month, had a chance to steal the gold. Needing a double in the final frame, the former PWBA champion left a 10-pin and settled for silver with 1,267. Asbaty, who missed the gold medal in 2001 by one pin, was one pin behind to earn bronze.
