    09/23/05

    2005 AmZ Championship

Metrobowl in San José, Costa Rica - September 18-28, 2005

L-R Alejandro Cruz and Daniel Falconi of Mexico won gold in men's doubles Thursday with 2612 6-game total holding off a late charge by the United States. Cruz threw three clutch strikes in the final frame to put away any hopes of a gold for Team USA's Steve Weber and Erik Vermilyea.

The Mexicans rolled the highest game (493) and the highest 3-game (1324) of the vent on the 43-ft. long oil pattern to improve one spot after finishing second on the 33-ft. short oil pattern on Wednesday. "I think we bowled with our hearts and that's it," Falconi said. "We made the right shots at the right moments, and I'm very happy to win gold." Cruz finished with 1,324 for six games and Falconi had 1,288.

Weber and Vermilyea finished with 2,578 and won silver. Their team mates David Haynes and Derek Sapp took bronze with 2541.

Another Mexican bowler, Benjamin Corona, had the best individual scores out of all bowlers. He closed with a high game of 279 for a 706 3-game set and 1335 total. His partner, Enrique Calvo, had 1023 as the pair finished in 11th place with 2358.

Action continues Friday with the first three games of trios.
