Two-hander Osku Palermaa wins qualifying in 8th Columbia 300 Vienna Open

    Palermaa and Tore Torgersen earm the top prize in the Doubles competition

    The 3-time defending European Bowling Tour ranking champion and 2005 Vienna Open winner totaled 1462 pins, an average of 243.67 for six games, to beat out 12-time PBA champion Chris Barnes (right), United States, also 1462, for the top spot due to the higher last game, 288 to 235.

    2010EBT15NickiAinge2.jpgEight-time PBA champion Mika Koivuniemi, Finland, was third with 1448, 2009 Women's EBT ranking champion Nicki Ainge (right), England, was the best woman in the field in fourth place with 1448 including 48 pins handicap, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    2010EBT15MartinLarsenSeanRash.jpg3-time World Champion Martin Larsen, Sweden, and 4-time PBA champion Sean Rash (left photo, l-r), United States, were tied at 1447 to finish qualifying in fifth and sixth place, respectively, due the higher last game for Larsen, 236 to 227.

    There was a bigger gap between 6th and 7th place which belonged to Mik Stampe, Denmark, with 1428. Rounding out the top 8, who will bypass the first round of the finals was Wichita State University standoutJosh Blanchard with 1411 or an average of 235.17.

    Those 8 players earned one bye and will automatically advance to Final Round 2.

Brunswick Euro Challenge winner Rob Thurlby (left), England, led Squad 17 with 1354 (225.67), good enough for 29th place in the overall qualifying. Rene Landl (right), Austria, was next with 1325 to leap into 40th place.

    Janin Ribguth qualified for the finals in 44th place with 1333 including handicap with Peter Basner, both Germany, in 46th place with 1318 and Gennadiy Sidorov, Russia in 47th place with 1316.

    Uwe Blank, Germany, took the 52nd and last place to advance to the finals with 1311 or an average of 218.50.

Swede Martin Larsen got things started in Squad 8 and was followed by Mika Koivuniemi (Squad 9), Dennis Larsen, Denmark (Squad 10) and Chris Barnes, United States (Squad 11). Tanya Cuva, Germany posted her 300 gane in Squad 16.

    Osku Palermaa and Tore Torgersen (pictured left), Norway, teamed to win the Doubles competition and the 1.600 Euro top prize with 2845 combined pinfall or an average of 237.08.

    Mika Koivuniemi and Chris Barnes, United States, finished second with 2828 and were followed by Nina Flack, Sweden, and Nicki Ainge (above right), England, in third with 2812 worth 1.200 and 1.000 Euro, respectively. The top 20 Doubles cashed for 10.230 Euro.

    2010VOLogo.jpg The 8th Columbia 300 Vienna Open is the 15th stop of the 2010 European Bowling Tour and one of the Tour's "Gold" events. The tournament will be held from Tuesday Sept. 28 through Sunday Oct. 3, 2010 at 32-lane Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria.

    Since the Ankara Open and the Austria Challenge have been cancelled and the English Open has lost its EBT status, the 2010 EBT Tour consists of 18 events - 2 EBT Platinum tournament (formerly Premier), 6 EBT Gold tournaments (formerly Major), 6 EBT Silver tournaments (formerly Challenger) and 4 EBT Satellite tournaments (new category).

    307 players from 25 countries compete for an increased total prize money of 70.630 Euro - 60.400 € in Singles and 10.230 € in Doubles. The singles champion will receive the 7.000 Euro top prize while the doubles winners will split 1.600.

    Once again the qualifying for the Vienna Open finals was contested as a doubles tournament. Each duo rolled at least one six-game block. Unlimited re-entries with different partners were possible but each player could only cash once with the same partner.

    The team with the highest total pinfall including handicap was declared the winner (no finals were played). The top 20 doubles cashed.

    Qualifying ran from Tuesday through Saturday and ended with the ultimate one-game Desperado Squad on Saturday night Oct. 2.. Women received 8 pins handicap each game, a standard on the European Bowling Tour

    A total of 64 players qualified for the Vienna Open finals on Sunday, Oct. 3:
    • the top 52 players from the overall qualifying standings
    • the first player each from Squad 1-6, who is not among the top 52 (total 6 players)
    • and the top 6 from the Desperado Squad.

    The other 52 players will bowl 6 games starting from scratch to cut to the top 22, who will join the top qualifiers in Round Two.

    Those 30 players will bowl another 6 games starting from scratch after which the field will be trimmed to the top 18, who will carry their pinfall forward into Round Three. After another 6-game block the top 4 with the highest 12-game total will advance to the stepladder finals.

    The No. 4 seed meets the No. 3 in the opening match and the winner takes on the No. 2 seed for the right to bowl the top seed for the title, 150 ranking points and the 7.000 Euro top prize.
