Cho Young-Seon beats Chris Barnes in Men’s Masters finale

In a championship medal match between the top seeded players, Cho Young-Seon , seeded second, defeated defending champion and No. 1 seed Chris Barnes , United States, 254-195, to win the gold medal in Men’s Masters at the 2013 WTBA World Championships.

Young-Seon (pictured left) followed in the footprints of his wife Son Yun-Hee (above left with husband Young-Seon), who won the gold medal in Women’s Masters less than hour ago, which gave Korea a sweep of the gold medals Masters and made Yun-Hee and Young-Seon the first couple in WTBA history which has won the Masters gold medals.

Barnes, who was looking for his third gold medal of the championships and the sixth overall, had a rough start into the title match on dual lane condition (left lane dressed with long oil, right lane dressed with short oil), failing to convert the 2-8-10 split in the first frame and converting single-pin spares in the next two frames.

Young-Seon came out of the gates commandingly, connecting for four strikes before he spared a 10-pin and left a pocket 7-10 split in the sixth frame, which resulted in an open. Barnes though could not capitalize on the mistake. He struck in the fourth frame and suffered back-to-back open frames in the fifth and sixth when he failed to convert the 1-2-4-10 wash-out twice.

Leading by 60 pins heading into his last four frames, the Korean reeled off five consecutive strikes to put the match out of reach for the 15-time PBA champion. Barnes closed out in style (above right), finishing with a five-bagger to add another silver medal to his impressive resume.

Jun-Yung, seeded fourth, had a slim 7-pin lead over Barnes heading into the last two frames of the semifinal match. Finishing first, Barnes struck three times to shut out the Korean for a 226-214 victory.

In the other semifinal match, Young-Seon ousted his team mate and No. 3 seed, Kim Jun-Yung (right) in a high-scoring match thanks to a double in frames three and four and a four-bagger in frames 6-9.

The World Tenpin Bowling Association World Championships run from Aug. 16 thru 31, 2013 at Sunset Station’s Strike Zone in Henderson, Nev. in the Las Vegas area. The Championships will award medals in six disciplines – Singles, Doubles, Trios, Team, All Events and Masters.
