England found success on the short pattern Tuesday, shooting 3,310 for three games to take the lead heading into Wednesday's final team block. The series included a record-breaking game of 1,261 in the second game, which included a perfect game by Kirsten Penny. Trailing England by 52 pins to sit in second place are the women from Indonesia with 3,252. Malaysia sits in third place 34 pins behind the Indonesians with 3,218 . The Team event concludes on Wednesday with the second block on long oil.

Sweden's Helen Johnsson, Malin Glendert and Nina Flack (l-r) overcame a 43-pin deficit in the final game to win the gold medal in the Women's World Championships in Mexico. The Swedes, who finished the event with 3,970, shot 686 in the finale while Team USA's Shannon O'Keefe, Tennelle Milligan and Lynda Barnes, who led the field after the first block, could only muster 601 and had to settle for silver with 3,928. Korea with claimed the bronze with 3,898.

At the 2006 Men's World Championship in Busan, Korea, 247 players from 44 countries targeted for just six gold, silver and bronze medals. Over the years the World Championships in other sports have progressed from the original few events and medals mostly in one discipline to many events with lots of medals in different disciplines in the current World Championships. Bowling should learn from other sports.

Israel (5) competed in all disciplines but had only one trio and two doubles.

Kim Tae-Won, Choi Jong-In and Joung Seoung-Joo, who posted a 4073 six-game total (226,28 average) in the afternoon squad, had secured the gold medal well before the final ball was rolled.

Jarrod Lean and Jason Belmonte, Australia, beat out their team mates Jason Walsh and Brandon Qualischefski for bronze by 17 pins.

The colorful opening ceremony was held at the Asiad Bowling Center (pictured left), a 36-laner located in the Busan Sports Complex. The competition will start on Thursday morning, August 31, at 9 am with the Doubles event.
