Joachim Karlsson wins qualifying in 8th Storm San Marino Open

    Swede earns 1.000 Euro bonus and leads top 48 into Sunday's finals; as the lone woman, Laurence Gaillard of France has already won the women ranking in San Marino; cut for 35th place was 1322 (220.33 average)

Karlsson was the only player of 242 from 21 countries who cracked the 1500-bar (250 average) when he posted 1519 in the 15th qualifying squad Friday afternoon.

    His fellow countryman Martin Larsen (right), was second with 1476. The 2011-12 PBA Tour Steve Nagy Sportsmanship Award winner had another 1466 series in Squad 19 on Saturday including games of 245, 226, 247, 265, 204 and 279.

    The next three places belonged to English bowlers. PBA champion Dominic Barrett, was third with 1458, followed by fellow PBA champion Stuart Williams in fourth place with 1438 and Rob Thurlby in fifth place with 1435.

    2012EBT11SamiLampo.jpg2012EBT11DennisEklund.jpgStavros Parasakis of Greece, was sixth with 1434. Sami Lampo (left) of Finland was second to Larsen in Squad 19 with 1426 to leap in seventh place. Lampo finished his set with 290, 260 and 279 (829, 276,33) to improve his previous high series of 1353 by 73 pins. Rounding out the top eight, who received two byes for the finals, was Chris Klerk, United States, with 1392 (232 average).

    The next eight players, who received one bye, was led by Dennis Eklund (right) of Sweden, who paced Squad 20 with 1389. The best Italian bowler, Massimiliano Celli, was tenth with 1388.

    Perttu Jussila, Finland (11th, 1387), Paul Moor, England (12th, 1383), PBA Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli, Venezuela (13th, 1382), Marcus Berndt, Sweden (14th, 1373) and three-time PBA champion Osku Palermaa, Finland (15th, 1371) all bowled their way to the finals in the high-scoring Squad 19.

    Fresh off his victory in the 10th Czech Open, 17-year-old two-hander Daniel Vezis (left) of England led the 21st and last squad with 1364, but fell five pins short of the top 16 to land in 17th place.

    Christian Racpan of Germany was the only other player in this squad who cracked the top 35. Racpan toppled 1329 pins, good for 32nd place. Maurizio Celli (right) of Italy hit the cut number with 1322 or an average of 220.33.

Laurence Gaillard (left) of France, who made the finals through the Squad 5-8 list, was the sole woman who survived the first cut and has already won the women's ranking in San Marino.

    Mathieu Berges, Switzerland (267), Valentin Fatu, Romania (255) and Markus Heinonen, Finland (248) scored big in the one-game Desperado Squad to earn the last three spots for the finals.

    Fir the records, Squad 18 leader Kostas Lyratzis (right) of Greece missed the cut by 17 pins in 50th place with 1305.

    2012EBT11SanMarinoOpenBanner1_small.jpg The 8th Storm San Marino Open is the 11th stop of the 2012 European Bowling Tour and the second out of four EBT "Gold" tournaments this season. The tournament will be held July 7-15 at 18-lane Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino and offers total prize fund of 60.200 Euro with 10.000 Euro going to the winner, 6.000 to the runner-up and 3.400 each to the third and fourth place finisher.

    The San Marino Open features a 40 feet Kegel lane conditioning pattern with 24.3ml volume oil total.

    The qualifying of the San Marino Open (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) ran from Saturday July 7 through Saturday, July 14 and concluded with the one-game Desperado Squad.

    Women receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire tournament, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 48 players advanced to the finals on Sunday, July 15 - the top 35 players from the overall qualifying standings plus the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 7-8, the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 9-10, the top 4 from the squads conducted on July 11-12, and the top 3 from the Desperado Squad. The top 8 qualifiers received two byes and qualifiers 9-16 got one.

    The other 32 players will bowl four games from scratch to cut to the top 16, who will meet qualifiers 9-16 in round two. Those 24 bowl another 4 games from scratch to cut to the top 8, who will join the top eight qualifiers in single-elimination match play with the two game total pinfall determining the winner.

    The highest seeded player bowls the lowest seeded, the second-highest seeded players bowls the second-lowest and so on. The field will be cut to 8, 4 then 2, who will bowl for the title and the 10.000 Euro top prize.

    2012EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2012 European Bowling Tour is made up of 21 events in 16 countries including two Platinum, four Gold, eight Silver and seven Satellite tournaments.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish in the event. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament such as the San Marino Open 2012 gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament gets 50 ranking points.

    Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 16 men and top 16 women who will compete in the sixth EBT Masters in Bratislava, Slovakia in Sept. 2013.
