Stuart Williams, Vaggelis Krizinis power their way into the lead in San Marino

Stuart Williams (pictured left) of England and Vaggelis Krizinis (right) from Greece battled it out for the qualifying lead in the 9th San Marino Open in Squad 14 Thursday evening at Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino.
When the dust had settled after a strike fest in the last game, Williams, who finished with 277, emerged as the squad winner en route to take the overall lead with 1467 and an average of 244.50 for six games.
The PBA champion and six-time European Bowling Tour titlist had a 25-pin cushion over the Greek international, who closed out his set with a near-perfect 296 and 276 to overtake second place with 1442 (240.33).

Third-placed Dominic Barrett (left), England's other PBA champion and also a six-time EBT titlist, rolled the tournament's first 300 game on his way to a 1394 total, good for seventh place overall.
The Qualifying winner will receive a 1.000 Euro bonus. The top 8 will receive two byes, while there is no bonus for a perfect game in this tournament.
Previous leaders Robert Andersson of Sweden and Italian Davide Spagnoli (above right, l-r), who tied at 1430 in the 10th qualifying squad on Wednesday, slipped to third and fourth place with Norman Neumann of Germany in fifth with 1403.

For the second consecutive day, long-time Italian national team member Federico Rossi (left) led the first squad of the day. Rossi knocked down 1374 pins had the higher last game than Larsen (267 to 228) to overtake 13th place in the overall standings. Places 9-thru 16 at the end of the qualifying will receive a first-round bye.
Marek Talpa, Czech Republic, who won his first EBT title in the Brunswick Italia Challenge last Sunday, was second to Rossi in Squad 12 to sit in 24th place with 1343. Third-place Helén Johnsson squeezed into the top 35 in 34 place with 1322 including handicap.
To qualify directly for the finals, players must average over 220. With 129 players from 26 countries in the books, Squad 3 leader Olivier Leroy (right) of Belgium holds the 35th and last place with 1322 or an average of 220.33 average.
By virtue of finishing atop the leaderboard of Squads 1-4, Leroy, however, will receive a wildcard for the finals when he slips out of the top 35.
Qualifying continues Friday, July 12, with Squad 15-17 scheduled for noon, 4 and 8 p.m. CEST.
The 9th Storm San Marino Open is the 10th stop of the 2013 European Bowling Tour and the third out of six EBT "Gold" tournaments this season. The tournament will be held July 6-14 at 18-lane Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino and offers total prize fund of 60.000 Euro with 8.000 Euro going to the winner, 5.000 to the runner-up, 3.500 to the third and 2.500 to the fourth place finisher.
The San Marino Open features a 41 feet Kegel lane conditioning pattern with 23.32 ml volume oil total.
The qualifying of the San Marino Open (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) runs from Saturday July 6 through Saturday, July 13 with the last qualifying squad 21 scheduled for 9 p.m. CEST. The qualifying winner will receive a 1.000 Euro bonus.
Qualifying concludes with the one-game Desperado Squad scheduled to start at half past Midnight on early Sunday morning. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire tournament, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.
A total of 48 players will advance to the finals on Sunday, July 14 - the top 35 players from the overall qualifying standings plus the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 6-7, the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 8-9, the top 4 from the squads conducted on July 10-11, and the top 3 from the Desperado Squad.
The top 8 qualifiers receive two byes and qualifiers 9-16 get one. The other 32 players will bowl four games from scratch to cut to the top 16, who will meet qualifiers 9-16 in round two. Those 24 bowl another 4 games from scratch to cut to the top 8, who will join the top eight in the last four-game round before the cut to the top 4 who will determine the winner in a traditional stepladder final.
The 2013 European Bowling Tour consists of 19 tournaments in 13 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, four Silver and seven Satellite events.
The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament such as the San Marino Open gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament gets 50 ranking points.
Points are tabulated throughout the season and the top 12 men and the top 12 women qualify for the seventh EBT Masters to be held March 3, 2014 at Dolfijn Bowling in Tilburg, Netherlands immediately following the EBT Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament 2014.
