Michael Fagan captures number one seed in Viernheim; Belmonte and Fagan perfect again

    Michael Fagan captures number one seed in Viernheim; Belmonte and Fagan perfect again  PBA member Michael Fagan took the No. 1 seed for the single elimination best-of-three match play finals in the 100.000 Euro Viernheim Open. Fagan, No. 3 after qualifying, averaged 248,63 for the 8-game round and felled 1989 pins. The American and qualifying leader Jason Belmonte rolled their second 300-game and the 10th and 11th of the tournament. Belmonte toppled 1905 pins despite a 157 in his final game.

    The top 8 - Fagan, Toni Laine, Belmonte, Michael Braendeskov, Tore Torgersen, Ryan Shafer, Paul Moor and Jesper Agerbo - will enjoy a bye during the first two rounds.

    All seven PBA professionals made the cut. Besides Fagan, Shafer and Torgersen, Lonnie Waliczek (17th), Pete Weber (20th), Dino Castillo (21st) and Doug Kent (28th).

     Dane Jimmy Dan Mortensen hit the cutoff number with 1684 or an average of 210,5. Swede Robert Andersson, who took the 64th and final qualifying post missed the cut in 41st position by 8 pins.

    As Britt Bröndsted of Denmark (pictured) is the sole remaining women in the match play finals, the 2003 World Ranking Masters champion already captured the women's crown as well as the 1.300 Euro bonus. Bröndsted averaged 205,63 for the round and felled 1701 pins including 56 pins handicap.

    Linda Haglund of Sweden (46th) receives 1.000 Euro for finishing second, England's Jo Harries (52nd) gets 750 Euro for third, Tanja Theissen (56th) of Germany earns 550 Euro and Zara Glover (58th) of England garners 400 Euro for fifth.

     Players ranked 9-40 after the semifinal will return Sunday morning, September 18 to begin best-of-three match play. Match play is a single-elimination, bracket format where bowlers are ranked based on the semifinal standings.

    Sunday's best-of-three match play will trim the field from 32, to 16, then to eight. Those eight will meet the eight semifinal leaders in the Super 16 round to cut to eight, to four, then 2. The two remaining players will meet in the finals to vie for the title and the 25.000 Euro (approx. $31,225) top prize.

    The Gutperle Anniversary - 1st Viernheim Open is the 15th event of the 2005 European Bowling Tour and the richest event in the EBT history with 100.000 Euro total prize fund.

    Toni Laine sets the pace in Round 1 in Viernheim
    Jesper Agerbo rolls 9th perfecto

     Finn Toni Laine set the pace in Round 1 at the Viernheim Open with players seeded 33rd through 64th after qualifying having completed the 8-game block. Laine, who qualified in 38th position, had high games of 256, 266 and 279 for 1916 pinfall total and an average of 239,5.

    6-time PBA champion Ryan Shafer was next with 1865. Dane Jesper Agerbo used the 9th perfecto of the tournament to land in third place with 1849. Rounding out the top five were Finn Pasi Uotila and Swede Dennis Eklund with 1807 and 1806, resp.

    2-Time PBA champion Lonnie Waliczek is seventh with 1790, while Hall of Famer Pete Weber is 10th with 1770. 2003 World Ranking Masters champion Britt Bröndsted of Denmark was the best of three ladies in the round in 16th position with 1701.

    The top 32 will take on the lanes on Saturday evening to complete the round. The top 40 will advance to the single elimination finals on Sunday morning. The top eight will enjoy a bye during the first two rounds of match play.
