Mykhaylo Kalika emerges as Squad C leader after 15/20 qualifying games

    Ukrainian averages 231.67 for 15 games to move to the top of the leaderboard; cut line for 24th place is currently 213.27 average

    2014BWCMykhayloKalika.jpg2014BWCTobiasBording2.jpgThe 26 men of Squad C kicked off the third day of qualifying in the 50th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup Thursday morning at 8 a.m. Central European Time at Sky Bowling Center in Wroclaw, Poland.

    Mykhaylo Kalika (pictured left) of Ukraine came out of the gates quickly with games of 230, 249, 213, 214 and 248 for 1154, an average of 230.80 and the second-highest block this morning, to move to the top of the leaderboard with 3475 15-game total and an overall average of 231.67.

    There are just four players in Squads A and B, who have a higher average after than Kalika but yet have to bowl their third block, tournament leader Tobias Börding, Germany (above right; 244.10), Oron Cohen, Israel (234.40); Biboy Rivera, Philippines and Romeo Gagenoiu, Romania (both 233.00).

    2014BWCSteveThornton.jpg2014BWCChrisBarnes.jpgSteve Thornton (left) of England closed out his series with 247, 248 and 246 for 1152 and 3434 total, an overall average of 228.93. 17-time PBA champion Chris Barnes (right), United States, was one pin behind in third place with 3433 (228.87).

    The six-time WTBA world champion had a slow start into the day (179, 195) but finished strong (234, back-to-back 245) for 1098. Juhani Tonteri of Finland toppled 1141 pins to sit in fourth place with 3374 and was followed by Dmitri Chilkine of Belarus with 1102 and 3256.

Kapronczay had games of 214, 194, 257, 248 and a high game of 288 at the end to leap 25 spots on the overall average list with 3072 and an average of 204.80.

    Two-time World Games gold medalist Bader Al-Shaikh (right) of Saudi Arabia remained on the cut line for 24th place with an average of 213.27 and 3199 total.

    The bowlers of Squad A will roll their third five-game block starting at 2.30 p.m. and Squad B bowlers will conclude the day starting at 9 p.m. CET.

    Live coverage and live streaming commences on Tuesday, November 4th, with the first round of qualifying and concludes on Sunday 9th with the stepladder finals.

    2014BWCLogo.jpg The preliminaries consist of four blocks of five games with the top 24 men and the top 24 women after 20 games advancing to the intermediate round. Those 24 players bowl further 8 games with the pinfall total from the preliminaries being carried forward.

    The top 8 men and the top 8 women after 28 games will bowl a further seven games round robin match play plus one game position round (total 8 games) with 30 pins bonus per win and 15 for a tie.

    The top 3 men and the top 3 women after 36 games including bonus pins will determine the champions in the stepladder finals in best-of-three games format.
