World Cup Hallen in Roedovre, Denmark (April 8-17, 2006)
Hayley White and Sarah Overall won the first gold medal in Girls Doubles in the 19th European Youth Championships at World Cup Hallen in Roedovre, Denmark with 2440 six-game total and an average of 203,33. The only other team with a 200-plus average, Anne Gales and Sofie Lomholdt of Denmark earned the silver medal with 2421. The bronze medal went to Emelie Alm and Caroline Jonsson of Sweden with 2393.
Austrian internationals Thomas Gross (r.) and Thomas Tybl (l.) and multiple German champion Achim Grabowski (center) dominated the men's Austrian National Trios Championship and cruised to victory with record performance. In the women's division, Irene Kohlhofer, Monika Schmotz and Luzia Ziegler secured the title in the very last frame.

Malta's Tenpin Bowlers have once again proved their chosen sporting discipline is one of the precious few in which our sportsmen and women can seriously compete against world class competition from nations much greater, and with far more resources than our own. The Team representing Malta in last week's IX Mediterranean Challenge Cup not only scooped an impressive array of medals in all divisions, but they managed to win the entire event against teams from eight other Mediterranean countries.

Two of our leading young bowlers have been banned for two years, having failed one of the regular drug tests conducted on Team England athletes, reports Eric Hayton, editor of the British Go Tenpin magazine. The Danish Bowling Federation will host the 19th European Youth Championships in Roedovre near Copenhagen April 7-17, 2006. 228 players (94 girls and 134 boys) from 24 ETBF member federations Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Island, Israel, Italy, Lativa, Netherlands, Norway, Polen, Russia, Scotland, South Africa, Sweden, Ukraine, Ungarn and Wales are expected to compete at 26-laner World Cup Hallen.
Greece captured the gold medal in the Team event at the Challenge Cup in San Marino. Natassa Rovithaki, Despina Chrysanthi, Vretos Pachoulis and Stavros Parasakis averaged 216,46 for six team games and felled 5195 pins. Malta with Sue Abela, Lorraine Casha, Brian Farrugia, Rankin Luke Camilleri finished 154 pins behind in second place. Bronze went to Turkey with Mine Karakullukcu, Ebru Ozogluuntur, Mithat Siveliol and Burak Natal.
Bowling Alley: Rose'n'Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino
Sue Abela of Malta earned her second gold medal in the 9th Mediterranean Challenge Cup in San Marino when she teamed with Lorraine Casha to win the women's Doubles with 2588 six-game total and an average of 215,67. On the men's side, Israel Tener and Johnatan Geller from Israel cruised to victory with 2715 and an average of 226,25. The doubles from Greece settled for the silver medals while the Italians took bronze in both division each.
Malta's Abela adds another MCC title to her impressive collection
Domenico Maddaloni of Italy powered his way to the gold medal in the men's Singles event at the 9th Mediterranean Challenge Cup in San Marino. Maddaloni fired games of 259, 226, 219, 254, 289 and 227 for 1474 six-game total and an average of 245,67. Sue Abela from Malta added yet another MCC title to her impressive collection when she won the women's Singles with 1348 and an average of 224,67. This was Abela's 17th gold medal in the 9-year history of the MCC.

The 9th Mediterranean Challenge Cup will start today with the official practice at Rose'n'Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino. Four players - two men and two women - from Cyprus, Gibraltar, Greece, Israel, Italy, Malta, Morocco, Turkey and host country San Marino will compete in Singles, Doubles and Mixed Teams on Friday and Saturday. Among the competitors is four-time defending women's All Events champion Sue Abela, Malta (pictured).
Britt Bröndsted of Denmark and Osku Palermaa of Finland overtook the lead in the women's and men's European rankings after the Brunswick Euro Challenge in Greece. Two-time defending ranking champion Bröndsted won the women's rankings at the BEC to overtake Zara Glover from England. Last year's men's runner-up Palermaa used his third second-place finish this season to position himself atop the men's leaderboard.
Swiss internationals Ruth Doppler and Philippe Huber were crowned 2006 Swiss National Championships in the women's and men's individual finals last weekend at Castel Bowling in Gland. The champions will represent Switzerland at the European Champion Cup (formerly the European Cup for Individuals) in Riga, Latvia, September 25 through October 1, 2006.

In a championship match between two players who use both hands to swing and bowl the bowling ball, Jason Belmonte of Australia defeated Osku Palermaa, Finland, 256-222, en route to win the Brunswick Euro Challenge at Strike Bowling Club in Thessalonica, Greece, and the 15.000 Euro first-place check. It was the first career title on the European Bowling Tour for the 2004 World Bowling Writers International Player of the Year.
The 2006 Belgian National Championships were held over three weekends in three cities - Jumet, October 15-16, 2005, Deurne, November 26-27, 2005, and the finals in Brussels, February 18-19, 2006. Defending champion Jean-Marc Lebon (pictured) captured his second consecutive men's title and the fourth of his career. Stéphanie Nicolas came from behind to win the women's title.
Kai Virtanen of Finland, a World Games and World Cup champion, received 44 ranking points in the Catalonia Open to maintain his lead in the men's European rankings with 147 points. Three-time World Champion Zara Glover, England, was the fourth-best women in Catalonia and earned 60 points en route to take the lead in the women's rankings with 159 points.
Federico Rossi won two matches in the stepladder finals of the Catalonia Open at Planet Bowling in Gava, Spain, en route to win the title and the 10.000 Euro top prize. The Italian, seeded second for the three-player shootout, topped Helen Johnsson, Sweden, in the semifinal match, 220-182, then defeated top seeded Nikolay Ovchinnikovs, Latvia, in the title match, 225-182. Gery Verbruggen, who led the tournament since the qualifying, slipped out of the top three in a span of four games in the semifinals to finish fourth.

Stuart Williams of England defeated Osku Palermaa, Finland, 444-415, over two games total pinfall to win the Ebonite International Luxembourg Open and the 5.000 Euro top prize. Palermaa finished second as he did in Tilburg last week, worth 3.500 Euro. Williams shot the sole 300-game of the tournament in Round Robin en route to grab the No. 1 seed for the stepladder finals.

International Bowling Industry (IBI) Publisher Scott Frager was asked to present a seminar on the evolution of bowling around the world and current worldwide trends affecting the industry.

The multiple German Champion was able to weather a strong charge by qualifying leader Osku Palermaa of Finland (240-217), who finished second with 457 pinfall total. Third place went to Bart van Kerckhoven, Netherlands, who overtook Christian Racpan, Germany, in the second game.
