Jason Belmonte averages over 250 to claim men’s World Cup

Jason Belmonte of Australia capped off a highly successful year with his first career victory in the 2011 Bowling World Cup in South Africa after defeating fellow PBA champion Tommy Jones, United States, in the men’s title match, two-games-to-one.

The top three of 81 men advanced to the stepladder finals in best-of-three games format Wednesday, Dec. 7 at Northcliff Bowling Center in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Belmonte (pictured left), who fell to Jones’ compatriot Bill Hoffman in the 2007 title match in St. Petersburg, Russia, lost the high-scoring first game to Jones (right), a 13-time PBA champion and PBA Player of the Year 2005-06, 259-279.

Fresh off an outstanding performance at the PBA World Series of Bowling last month, the two-hander from Down Under rebounded with two straight wins, 247-216 and 259-236, to wrap up the title.

Belmonte, seeded second after the 36-game preliminaries, went the distance against No. 3 seed, Mykhaylo Kalika (right), Ukraine, in the semifinals. The Aussie took the first game, 237-203, but Kalika leveled the match with a huge 266-248 win in game two. Belmonte rebounded with a 266 to fly past the Ukrainian (185) en route to advance to the title match.

Belmonte had 765 (255 average) in te title match and 751 (250.33) in the semifinal for 1516, or an average of 262.66 for the six games in the stepladder final.

Jonas and his team mate Diandra Asbaty (pictured right), who finished second in the women’s division, secured the Bent Petersen Award for the top country in the 47th edition of the Bowling World Cup.

The 47th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup was held from Nov. 30 – Dec. 7, 2011 at Northcliff Bowling Center in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The 81 men, who participated in the event, bowled 20 qualifying games, four blocks of five games on four days, before the field was cut to the top 24 who bowled eight additional games on Monday, Dec. 5.

The top eight after 28 games advanced to the Round of 8 and bowled another eight games on Tuesday morning to cut to the top three who determined the champion in the stepladder finals on Wednesday, Dec. 7.
