Magnus Johnson takes the early lead in men's division as Squad A has completed qualifying

    Swedish youngster finishes strong to beat out Romania's Romeo Gagenoiu for top spot by just one pin; average to make the cut in 24th place is currently 213.27

    2014BWCMagnusJohnson2.jpg2014BWCRomeoGagenoiu.jpgMagnus Johnson (pictured left) had a strong finish in his fourth and final block to take the early lead in men's division as Squad A has completed qualifying in the 50th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup at Sky Bowling Center in Wroclaw, Poland.

    The 21-year-old Swedish youth national team member started the round with back-to-back 232 followed by huge 266 game. Johnson fell behind after a 179 in the fourth but rebounded with a huge 278 game for 1187 total, an average of 237.40.

    Johnson's 4625 20-game total and 231.25 average was just pin better than Romeo Gagenoiu (right) of Romania, who had to settle for second place with 4624 (231.20) despite the squad-best 1204 series (240.80). Gagenoiu had games of 268, 224, 258, 258 and 196.

    Aussie Glen Loader (left) had an 1185 series including back-to-back 269 and 266 games to shift into fifth place with 4539. Syafiq Ridhwan (right) of Malaysia, who won the 48th World Cup here in Wroclaw two years ago, sits in sixth place with 4508.

    Two-time World Cup champion Michael Schmidt (2005, 2010) of Canada used an 1155 series to land seventh place with 4452. Honk Kong's Him Chung holds eighth place with 4437.

The average to make the cut in 24th place is currently 213.27, set by two-time Asian Games gold medalist Bader Al-Shaikh of Saudi Arabia.

    Artur Colomer (right) of Catalonia set a highlight in the fourth game when he rolled the second perfecto of the 50th World Cup and the 69th in the history of the event.

    Colomer, who started the day in 57th place averaging 191.47 for 15 games, came out of the gates with 174 and 187 before he finished with 269, 300 and 246 (815 for three games; 271.67 average) for 1176. He sits currently sits in 13th place with 4048 and an average of 202.40.

    Men's Squads B and C will bowl their last qualifying blocks starting a 3 and 9 p.m. The top 24 men will advance to the intermediate round on Saturday starting at 1.15 p.m. Central European Time (CET). All other players will be eliminated and finish in 25th to 70th place according to their 20-game totals.

    Live coverage and live streaming commences on Tuesday, November 4th, with the first round of qualifying and concludes on Sunday 9th with the stepladder finals.

    2014BWCLogo.jpg The preliminaries consist of four blocks of five games with the top 24 men and the top 24 women after 20 games advancing to the intermediate round. Those 24 players bowl further 8 games with the pinfall total from the preliminaries being carried forward.

    The top 8 men and the top 8 women after 28 games will bowl a further seven games round robin match play plus one game position round (total 8 games) with 30 pins bonus per win and 15 for a tie.

    The top 3 men and the top 3 women after 36 games including bonus pins will determine the champions in the stepladder finals in best-of-three games format.
